Whether you're looking to build your own home theater or want to learn more about TVs, displays, projectors and more, we've got you covered. GIFs are mostly animated images that look like short videos, but without sound Tim Fisher has over 30 years of professional technology experience.
He has been writing about technology for over two decades and serves as SVP and General Manager of Lifewire. This article explains what a GIF is, how to open one on your computer or phone, how to create or edit an existing one yourself, and how to convert a GIF to another image or video format.
A file with the GIF file extension is a Graphical Transfer Format file. GIFs (pronounced 'gif' or 'jiff') are small image files that most people use to create animated images to share on social media. However, GIF can be used with larger files. Although GIFs do not contain audio data, they are found online as a way to share video clips.
What Is A Gif?
Websites often use them to display animated objects such as buttons or header images. Since they are stored in a lossless format, the image quality does not degrade when using GIF compression. Before looking at the programs mentioned below, first decide what you are after.

Do you need a program that can play the GIF, such as a video or image viewer, or something that allows you to edit the GIF? On almost all operating systems, most web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.) open online GIFs without any problems—you don't need any other program on your computer.
Open native GIFs via the Open menu or drag and drop them into the browser window. However, with other applications like Photoshop, even though the software can technically open GIFs with other graphics, it won't display the GIF as you might expect. Instead, it opens each frame of the file as a separate layer.
While it's great for editing GIFs, it's not great for easy playback/viewing like in a web browser. Next to a basic web browser, the default graphics viewer in Windows called Photos is probably the easiest way to open them in that OS. Some other programs for Windows that can open GIF files include Adobe's Photoshop Elements and Illustrator programs, Corel Draw, Corel PaintShop Pro, and Canvas.
What Is A Gif?
If you use macOS, Apple Preview, Safari, and the aforementioned Adobe programs, you can work with GIF files. On Linux, use GIMP, but iOS and Android devices (and any desktop OS) can view GIF files in Google Drive. Some mobile devices open GIFs in their default photo apps.
This may depend on how old your device is or if the software is up-to-date, but most of them allow you to download and display GIF files without installing any additional apps. Given the number of programs that open GIF files, you probably have at least two installed, and the real possibility that they open by default (ie when you double-click or double-tap on one) isn't what you need to use.

If you find it, you can change that default GIF program in Windows. Converting a GIF file to another file format is easy if you use an online file converter. That way, you don't need to download a program to convert two GIFs. FileZigZag is an awesome website that not only converts GIF to image formats like JPG, PNG, TGA, TIFF and BMP, but also to video file formats like MP4, MOV, AVI and 3GP.
Another such online GIF converter is Zamzar. The GIF viewers mentioned above may be some other options to save the file in a different format. Most of those programs are image editors, so you can use them to edit a GIF and save it as a video or image file format.
How To Use Gifs
Most converters can do the opposite and convert an image or video to GIF format. Use free online GIF maker tools to create your own GIF from video. For example, Imgur creates GIFs from online videos, letting you choose which part of the video should be a GIF.
It also allows you to overwrite text. Aside from Imgur, GIPHY is one of the best places to find popular and new GIFs that you can download or easily share on other websites. You can share the GIF on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and more, and you can even download it yourself and email the GIF.
GIPHY also publishes a link to the HTML5 version of each of their GIFs. As we mentioned above, Photoshop is another example of a program that can convert a series of images into a GIF file; How to make a GIF in Photoshop guide provides all the details.

How To Convert A Gif File
Parts of the GIF file are transparent to reveal the background of the image. Because GIF files are generally limited in the number of colors that can be displayed (only 256), other graphic formats, such as JPG, which can store millions of colors, work better for full images, such as those created with a digital camera.
GIF files are used on websites when there is no need to have large amounts of color, such as buttons or banners. GIFs can actually store more than 256 colors, but this involves a process where the file is larger than necessary - something that can be achieved with JPG without much impact on size.
The original GIF format was called GIF 87a and was released by CompuServe in 1987. A few years later, the company updated the design and named it the GIF 98a. This is the second iteration to include transparent backgrounds and support for storing metadata. While both versions of the GIF format allow animations, 98a includes delayed animation support.
To create a GIF in Photoshop, choose File > Import > Video Frames to Layers and open the video you want to convert to a GIF. Select a part of it using only the selected range and go to Window > Timeline to preview or edit it.
