I wanted a vegan backpack and found a pretty rugged bag that had this unique design. I brought the bag home, in America people stopped me on the street to tell me how much they loved my bag. I found myself traveling to Sumatra again, working on a documentary series about natural remedies and healing.
One day, I again came across the embroidery designs you see now on Banda Bags. I had to know where they came from, so I traveled to the countryside and met the women who created such unique designs. These were great artisans creating curious and unique hand embroidered designs and I was fascinated by their craft.
I knew immediately that I had to start collaborating with these women who seemed to create magic with this design. My search for this magical and unique design led me to a village in the Banda Aceh area of Sumatra. If you've been paying attention to the news for the past fifteen years, you'll remember that this is the world's worst tsunami site.

Traveling Sumatra, Running Into A Unique Design
The earthquake that shook this region literally shook the earth off its axis. The tsunami that followed devastated the area and killed more than two hundred thousand people. I came down in the wake of that disaster, which happened a decade later. Looking around, I imagined that this had happened only a week ago.
We can't believe these beautiful embroidery patterns were born here. One day I had the idea that I could bring this unique design to the world and I could help these women who were stuck in a situation that had not improved over the years.
This remote area had very little opportunity to revive the economy, but they had something I knew the world would appreciate. We worked together to create a vegan and cruelty-free bag that would suit both the runway and the checkout line. The weekend bag was born.
Shortly after a weekend of designing, we got the Nano. This is a vegan leather bag that really makes a statement. Then we created a vegan backpack that anyone can carry. The vegan backpack is lovely and just the right size to carry all your essentials.

A Second Run-In
The shell bag is a unique design that we came up with because we haven't seen anything like it. There's nothing like it yet. Our vegan wallets take familiar shapes, but the designs are totally gang. We are constantly debating and playing with new ideas and want to be one of the most innovative vegan and cruelty-free fashion bag companies on the planet.
Banda Bags helped increase the economic capacity of the tsunami victims. When I started Banda Bags, I became the foundation of the company to pay fair wages and ensure the safety and well-being of artisans. Also, I wanted a bag that was sustainable and cruelty free.
The weekend bag and all our styles are made from the highest quality vegan leather. Banda Bags do not use any animal products, making our bags 100% vegan. Our vegan leather bags are made from hand-selected materials that we constantly strive to innovate. Now we are looking for every way to make our bags more sustainable for the environment.
This means finding materials with more recycled content and innovation in manufacturing. There are all kinds of cool materials that could one day replace the vegan leather we use today. We are talking about materials made from all natural sources, including pineapple. We're even looking into ways to make yarn out of ocean plastic!
