It wasn't until I got to college that I realized it wasn't normal to have a resource officer on campus. I also had no idea it was rare to see your peers arrested at school and sent to the juvenile system for a very minor offense.

Things escalate quickly at school when Shona, a young trans girl in Moss's English class, finds her medication in her locker and mistakes it for drugs, leading to an officer assaulting her. Students reacted angrily to the incident, and the school responded by allowing the police department to install metal detectors in the entrance.
Moss's friend Reg refused to go through the detector because he was moving pins in his leg after a car accident that left him on crutches and in a wheelchair. When a policeman forces him, magnets attach him to the detector, which worsens his injuries and prevents him from walking again.

Moss reluctantly agrees, but having seen the movement to get justice for his father years ago, he doubts he will ever achieve anything. Before the murder, Moss begins to realize that Esperanza, who is better funded by her wealthy white parents and attends a predominantly white school, does not understand the reality that her poor, marginalized friends face.
The situation started when Esperanza's mother told the school principal that she reported the protest, who ignorantly believed that she was helping. Moss blames Esperanza's mother and is angry with Esperanza herself. In a fit of rage, he wandered off on his own and eventually tied himself to a flagpole outside the police building in protest of Javier's murder.
