On December 26, 2004, the Tsunami killed about 150,000 people in Banda Aceh. Parts of the city were completely flooded. Since then, many aid agencies have stepped in to help rebuild. The long-running conflict between the Acehian Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Army (TNI) was temporarily resolved by a peace agreement on August 15, 2005. Since then, the peace process has been running smoothly.
In 2006, the first direct and democratic local government elections were held in the voivodeship. In 2007, the first democratically elected governor, Irwandi Yusuf, was sworn in. Banda Aceh has a tropical subtropical climate with an almost constant average temperature. The average annual temperature of the city is 27°C.
However, the city has both wet and dry seasons, with June through August being the driest months of the year. There is no true dry season in Banda Aceh with an average rainfall of less than 60mm. On average, the city receives slightly less than 2,000 mm of rain per year.
By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Jalan Surah) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. Visa for 30 days can be obtained at the airport in Banda Aceh. Kuala Lumpur embassy can sometimes process your visa on the same day if you complete all formalities before noon, but this should only be for Malaysian residents.

Night buses run non-stop from Medan to Banda Aceh from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gaia Mada, Medan. The price starts from 110,000 rupees in a regular bus with large seats up to 200,000 rupees in a bus with wide seats.
Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but journeys are generally longer. Prices are slightly cheaper than coaches. It is also possible to go from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutakan and Takengon. It will be 20 hours in total.
Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan, a 1-hour journey, Jakarta, a 2-hour 40-minute journey, or Singapore, nearly 4 hours. There is no shuttle bus to the airport now. The only way to get to the city is by airport taxi, which costs Rp 100,000 (2019).

The taxi rank is on the left hand side of the arrivals gate. Visa formalities at this airport are similar to those at other Indonesian immigration gates. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port near Medan. Receives ships from Batam, Indonesia (common route from Singapore).
The ferry from Penang is no longer running. From Ulhi Lhi, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Ve and Pulau Aceh. The main means of transport are bekak (mototaxi) and labi-labi (public minibus). After the tsunami, the sudden influx of money made the locals accustomed to overcharging, but now stability has returned.

In the city center there are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets.
There are also small souvenir shops selling various local products. Hermes Palace Shopping Center is located in downtown Banda Aceh. The mall has over 100 shops, including grocery stores, supermarkets and clothing stores. Acenic breakfast is nasi gourih, rice cooked in coconut milk, available in cafes around the world.
Food stalls and Padang restaurants are open in the unspoilt part of the city, and fruit carts are everywhere. Along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western outskirts of the city, around Ulee Kareng, there are good cafes with fun views of the rice fields. There are three fast food chains in the center: A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.

As with all travelers, it takes common sense and a good attitude to get along in this small town. But there are a few points to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities, it's best not to go out alone after 10pm.
