How To Spot A Gift Card Scam

More Americans are reporting being ripped off in gift card scams. About a third of people who reported fraud to the Federal Trade Commission through September of this year said they were asked to pay with a gift card or reloadable card.

That's a more than 300% increase over the proportion of people who reported the same scam in 2015. In fact, the FTC says gift cards are now the number one payment method used by scammers. How are gift cards used for fraud? Typically in a scam, scammers call or email people, outline some scenario where they need money immediately, and ask for payment via a gift card.

According to the FTC, scammers typically ask for money from a specific, popular card, such as iTunes, Google Play or Amazon. Gift cards are popular with fraudsters because they are like cash. Spending is anonymous and fraudsters don't need a physical card to use it.

They simply ask for the gift card number and pin code on the back. For consumers, gift cards represent an additional blow to fraud: it is very difficult to cancel a purchase or get a refund. Through September of this year, consumers reported losing a total of $74 million to gift card or reloadable card fraud, up from $53 million during the same period in 2015, according to the Wall Street Journal.

How To Spot A Gift Card Scam

Anyone can fall victim to financial fraud, but older consumers are particularly vulnerable. It is estimated that one in five people over the age of 65 have experienced financial abuse or fraud, costing up to $3 billion annually. This week, for example, a Quartz investigation revealed a scheme in which dozens of elderly consumers lost large sums of their retirement savings when they bought overpriced gold and silver after being targeted by Facebook ads.

Scammers have become increasingly adept at making phone calls and emails sound and appear legitimate. Even Peter Santis, who works at a password protection software company, was almost caught by a fake email. He told the Wall Street Journal that he thought the email from his boss asking for $3,000 in Amazon gift cards seemed like the right thing to do.

He only found out it was fake after he called his boss to check. "It can happen to anyone, even someone at a cybersecurity firm," Santis told the Journal. If you receive an email asking for money or other help, check carefully to make sure it's coming from the correct email address of someone you know.

Scammers often want an address that looks correct but is one or two letters off. If it's a call asking for help for someone in financial trouble, hang up and call the person to make sure it's a real situation, the Journal recommends. But the best way to avoid falling for a scam is to simply refuse to pay for anything over the phone unless you initiate the call.

And remember, companies, government officials or law enforcement will never ask you to pay with a gift card. "If someone tells you to pay with a gift card or send money — for any reason — that's a sure sign of fraud," the FTC wrote.

If you have already paid a fraudster with a gift card, immediately call the company that issued the card and tell them it has been used in a scam. If you make a transaction before the fraudster uses the card, you may be able to get your money back.
