Here are some gifts with names that contain foul language. Avoid these Chinese gift-giving mistakes. Clocks of any kind should not be avoided because 送鐘 (sòng zhōng, send a clock) sounds like 送終 (sòng zhōng), which is a funeral ritual. Clocks also symbolize the fact that time is running out;
therefore, giving a watch is a subtle reminder that relationships and life have an end. Giving someone a handkerchief (送巾, sòng jīn) sounds like 斷根 (duàngēn), a parting greeting. This gift is not particularly suitable for a boyfriend or girlfriend - unless you want to break up.
Chinese Gift-Giving: What Not To Buy
Giving your friend an umbrella may seem like an innocent act; however, its subtle meaning is that you want to end the friendship with him. If it's raining and you're worried about getting wet, it's best to both stay under your umbrella until you reach your friend's destination.

thus, ending your friendship. The green hat is a metaphor in Chinese 帶綠帽 (dài lǜ mào, with a green hat) meaning that a man's wife is unfaithful. Why green? A turtle is green and turtles hide their heads in their shells, so calling someone a 'turtle' will get you in trouble because it's like calling someone a coward.
Towels are often given as gifts at funerals, so avoid giving this gift in other situations. Giving sharp objects that are used to cut things suggests that you want to end a friendship or relationship. Yellow chrysanthemums and white flowers of any kind are used at funerals, so giving white flowers is synonymous with death.

I can't even imagine if it was a pair of shoes. Maybe I should have taken it off and taken them out. There are many superstitions that we grow up with. I recently did a survey and asked how many people deposit money when they give someone a wallet.
At one point, it was a draw. Most people have never heard of such a thing. Add money? I just paid for my wallet?!?! However, others, like me, believe it brings luck to the recipient. You send congratulations so that their wallet is no longer empty.
I leave money in wallets that I no longer use. I'm not talking hundreds of dollars, but a quarter or a dollar will do. When asked how many people bring gifts to a guest when they are invited to a meeting. 71% answered yes, while 29% answered no.

Again, this goes to my mother. "Never go to a party empty-handed," he used to say. My favorite is a bottle of wine - (generally my favorite name if I don't know the host family's favorite). No one can go wrong with a bottle of wine unless the guest, or their partner, is a recovering alcoholic (always worth checking) If so, dessert always wins!
Green Hats
An oldie, but we were told as a kid, it was lucky to celebrate your birthday BEFORE your actual birthday, just in case you died before it arrived. It took me years to deal with this. I mean, if I celebrated my birthday before it came and died before my birthday, I had a party!!
But in full transparency, I still celebrate my birthday, with my kids, around if not ALWAYS on or after our birthdays. I'm not one to test the future. More than that, and she said so lol. Another was "never buy or install a crib until the baby is born."
Why mother? Why? His answer "Only if the child doesn't". my God!! It looks like a lot of doom and gloom and death awaits. But yeah, three kids and we never bought or made a bed until my kids were born. Basically, I think this superstition is to help if something goes wrong and it helps reduce the stress of getting all the baby things out.
You may be wondering what year my mother was born? 1800? Infant mortality has improved significantly, so is it worth buying a bed? I mean what other great baby product can our affiliates install and buy? Well, I think it's a cultural thing. My family is from Jamaica and it's fun and interesting to learn about different superstitions in other cultures.
