Charlie agrees to take her to an abortion clinic. While waiting for his sister at the abortion clinic, Charlie remembers teaching her where babies come from. Charlie waited in the car and smoked a cigarette. When his sister comes out, she says she's going to tell her parents about Charlie's smoking, but Charlie reminds her that she won't and they laugh.
When they got home, their parents asked them where they had been all day, and Charlie's sister triumphantly hid. Mary Elizabeth walked with Charlie and kept talking. They watch foreign films, then drink cognac, listen to Billie Holiday records, and get high. In the next letter to his "friend", a few weeks after the second date, Charlie talks about how much Mary Elizabeth talks.
Once he hung up and left without her noticing. Charlie's mother asks Charlie to invite Sam and Patrick, but as soon as she does, Mary Elizabeth walks in and invites herself to dinner. Mary Elizabeth completely monopolizes the evening's conversation, much to Charlie's annoyance, because the night is supposed to be about Sam and Patrick.

Although Charlie was advised by his sister and psychiatrist to be honest, he did not tell Mary Elizabeth about his grief. Mary Elizabeth gives Charlie a book of e.e.cummings poetry because she likes it and it causes Charlie to go on a walk of gratitude.
January 14, 1992 And January 25, 1992
Charlie was so angry that he returned the book to the bookstore, but immediately felt guilty and returned the book. He bought Mary Elizabeth a copy of To Kill a Mockingbird, but she was protective of it. A few days later, Charlie and his friends are playing Truth or Dare.
Patrick dares Charlie to kiss the prettiest girl in the room and Charlie kisses Sam. Mary Elizabeth leaves the room, followed by Sam, who says to Charlie, "What's the matter with you?" Charlie started to cry. Patrick takes Charlie home and Charlie tells him everything.
When Charlie comes home, he lies in his bed, eh. Cumming books, and listen to Billie Holiday records. None of Charlie's friends talk to him after the Truth or Dare showdown. He spent spring break reading Hamlet, the last book Bill gave him. Charlie tries to apologize to Mary Elizabeth, but she tells him it's too late.
Patrick tells Charlie that he needs to get away from them for a while. Charlie wants to know how to undo it all, but he can't. Instead, he smokes. After the holiday, Charlie was happier almost immediately. His voice in the January letters is a sweet, almost forced happiness that is too deliberate and too contrived compared to the raw and depressed Charlie who ends the last letter in December.
