It's important to know which purchases fall into each bonus category so you can make an informed decision about which card to use for your expenses. For example, the list of eligible streaming services for earning bonus points on your Chase Sapphire Preferred® card is not as extensive as some other issuers classify as streaming.
Here's a look at the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Sapphire Reserve bonus categories and which purchases trigger (or don't trigger) bonus points. Here we focus on the rewards and benefits that come with each card. This card has no value if you pay any late fees on it.
Chase Sapphire Preferred Bonus Categories
When using a credit card, it's important to pay off your balance in full each month, pay on time, and use only what you can afford. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® card currently offers a limited-time enhanced welcome bonus of 80,000 bonus points on purchases of $4,000 within the first 3 months of account opening (worth approximately $1,440 on travel based on Insider's points and miles estimates). .

Points can be earned in the following levels. Some of these categories are easy to navigate, while others have very specific limitations. The Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal works much like an online travel agency (OTA) and can be used to book flights, hotels, car rentals, vacation rentals, activities and cruises.
You can pay with your Ultimate Rewards points at time of booking, with a Chase card, or a combination of the two. Chase classifies meals as purchases from merchants whose main business is to dine at sit-down or dining venues, including fast-food and fine-dining restaurants.
5X Points On All Travel Purchased Through Chase Ultimate Rewards
In practice, this includes some places such as bars, breweries and coffee shops that do not serve food as their primary business. Food delivery services qualify if they are classified as restaurant franchisees, so the most popular delivery services such as GrubHub and DoorDash should be included.
However, if the location is within a larger facility, such as a retail location at a sports arena or hotel restaurant, it will not count as a restaurant purchase unless the retail location sets up to classify such purchases as restaurants. Bakeries, catering and gift card outlets are also excluded.

5X Points On All Travel Purchased Through Chase Ultimate Rewards
Earn 3x points when you use your card for grocery pickup and delivery orders placed online at grocery stores, specialty food stores, or delivery services that qualify for grocery stores (excluding membership fees and activation fees). Meal kit delivery service is included, but purchases at Walmart, Target, wholesale clubs, liquor stores and specialty retailers are not.
Purchases at pharmacies (including supermarkets), gift cards, gift boxes and gift baskets are also excluded. The good news is that Chase defines travel very broadly. You will earn 2x points on eligible travel purchases (except for Chase Travel Portal purchases where you earn 5x). It doesn't actually work.
These purchases do not earn Travel Bonus Points. The Chase Sapphire Reserve® currently offers a welcome bonus of 60,000 bonus points when you spend $4,000 on purchases during the first three months of account opening. The average value of Chase Ultimate Rewards points is 1.8 cents each, so this bonus is worth approximately $1,080 for travel.

3X Points On Dining
Earn 10 points per dollar spent on prepaid purchases through Ultimate Rewards at Chase Dining using your Chase Sapphire Reserve®. This includes delivery, pickup, prepaid reservations or reservation deposits if you pay for your purchase on UltimateRewards.com. However, this does not apply to reservation-related purchases made directly at the restaurant, and some of the purchases are not redeemed for points.
Earn 10 points per dollar spent on Chase Sapphire Reserve® on prepaid car rentals or hotel stays through Chase Ultimate Rewards (online or by calling the number on the back of your card). As with other Chase travel portal purchases, you will not earn anything on the portion of a transaction paid with points.
Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection purchases are not eligible and Bonus Points cannot be earned on hotel or car rental related purchases not made through Ultimate Rewards (e.g. hotel restaurants or over-the-counter vehicle rental accessories). . Similarly, you'll earn 5x points on your airfare when you purchase with the Chase Sapphire Reserve® through the Chase online portal or by calling the phone number on the back of your card.
Air travel-related purchases made outside the Ultimate Rewards portal (e.g. in-flight purchases, airline mileage purchases or airport purchases) are not eligible for 5x points. In addition, some purchases paid with Points will not be credited. All other travel and restaurant purchases not included in the above categories earn triple points with the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and qualifying purchases are equivalent to purchases on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® card mentioned above.
