In the following days he was officially declared the new King of England and now, after months of scrupulous preparations, his coronation is at hand.
Heir to the throne for 70 years, Charles will be officially crowned on May 6 in a grandiose and deeply religious ceremony. Thousands of people will flock to Westminster Abbey and the streets around central London for a glorious display of British pomp. There is a lot of speculation going around and some items are still being finalized, but if it's official, we've got you covered.
What Is A Coronation?
Here's CNN's essential guide to celebrating — we'll keep updating it to make sure you're in the loop. Charles' accession to the throne occurred on the death of the queen. It was, predictably, a deeply bleak time as the nation gathered to bid farewell to its longest-reigning ruler.
Eight months later, the coronation will look very different. It is a time of public celebration of the new king. It will be a spectacularly over-the-top exhibition attended by dignitaries from around the world and watched by billions of people. The word "coronation" comes from the Latin word "corona" which means a crown.
But it is much more than literally placing a crown on the ruler's head. It is the symbol of the union of monarchy, church and state for a religious ceremony, during which the king makes vows to both God and country. Buckingham Palace said it would "reflect the monarch's role today and look to the future, albeit rooted in long-standing tradition and flattery".

How Can I Watch The Service?
This is something that has yet to be confirmed. Charles's coronation should be shorter than his mother's seventy years ago. Then, the ceremony — which was the first live royal ceremony televised — lasted more than three hours. This time, many experts suggest it could probably be closer to two hours.
Coronations have remained the same for over 1,000 years and organizers tend to stick to that structure, so there's plenty going on. Ok, so let's move on to the specifics. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, will officiate. The main elements of the service are recognition, oath, consecration, investiture, coronation and veneration.
Recognition is when the ruler is in the monastic theater and presents himself to the people. After taking the coronation oath – which is a vow to rule according to law, exercise justice with mercy, and uphold the Church of England – the king is anointed with holy oil by the archbishop.
This moment is considered the holiest part of the service and was not televised in 1953. Ahead of Charles' big day, Archbishop Welby explained why we won't even see the King, writing in the official souvenir program that the moment " it symbolizes the people's commitment to a special task that requires God's help".
