They support, inspire, motivate and bring learning to life, and their salaries rarely reflect how much time and energy they put into their work. Teacher Appreciation Week is an opportunity for students, parents and administrators to show their appreciation. "Students and families celebrate teachers on Teacher Appreciation Week by making cards, gifts and celebrating their educators in many other ways," says Sarah Murtaza, a virtual instructor for K-5 students at Carnegie Learning who has taught public and private
schools in California. Here's a little background on the occasion and some tips on how to celebrate. Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated the first full week in May. This year it is May 7-12. "Parents will give gifts, students will write letters, and the administration will buy us a special lunch."
The parent teacher organization at our school usually does something special," says Hannah Wilde, a private middle school teacher and education blogger in Ohio. Teachers are recognized not only in the school, but also outside it. Local businesses often offer deals and discounts to teachers that week.

Teachers can credit former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt for laying the groundwork for what eventually became Teacher Appreciation Week. In 1953, Roosevelt called on Congress to create a day to recognize educators. However, it did not become a national day until March 7, 1980, after a concerted lobbying effort by the National Education Association and some state boards.

In 1984, the National Parent Teacher Association designated the first full week of May as Teacher Appreciation Week. Many schools hold a week of special events to honor their teachers. Teachers can usually expect special breakfasts or lunches hosted by administrators and parents. “The teacher awards are held every year by the parent teacher association.
They come up with some kind of fun theme that spreads over five days," says Christine Weiss, a longtime elementary school teacher in Wilmington, Delaware. This year, she said, the week is baseball-themed, including a "fun from the trunk" lunch and a "7th Inning Stretch" with coffee, tea and treats.
Parents, through the PTA or PTO, are usually the ones who organize these events. "This year they're bringing a flower cart so we can all make a bouquet to take home, they're buying us lunch at a local restaurant, and they're bringing us a massage chair to use during our planning period."

says Wilde. Josh DeSantis, an associate professor of education at York College in Pennsylvania, says that when he was an eighth-grade social studies teacher in Pennsylvania's Susquenita School District, he received encouraging notes along with small treats in the teacher's mailbox. But the special lunches were the most appreciated.
The cheesy potato casserole, meatballs and brownies were a welcome break from the cafeteria chicken tenders and pizza I'd been eating most of the year," says DeSantis. She says there are many ways parents can thank teachers during the week. “One of the most impressive is through your school's PTO.

I encourage you to reach out and explore how you can get involved,” says DeSantis. “I also recommend nominating outstanding teachers for local, state or national teaching awards. When it comes to individual gifts, teachers say a simple handmade card or note from your child telling them how impressed they were will be greatly appreciated.
Teachers appreciate any thoughtful gift. Handwritten cards are the most appreciated gifts. "I've saved a lot over the years," says Weiss. DeSantis agrees, saying many teachers "keep a rainy day journal with notes like these to encourage them when times get tough." Donna Whittaker, vice president of curriculum and education for early childhood academy Big Blue Marble Academy in Auburn, Ala., says many schools and child care centers have teachers fill out surveys about some of their favorite things so parents can provide

gifts they will appreciate. and look forward to their child's teacher. However, there are gifts that many teachers say they don't like. Educators say coffee mugs, mugs, apples, lotion and, in general, any item with teacher profanity on it are not the most desirable. "While we appreciate all gifts, the things we shouldn't give teachers are candles, mugs, homemade treats and food, bath and body products," Weiss says.
Many teachers receive them year after year. But parents and students aren't the only ones who sometimes get it wrong. Teacher blog Teacher Misery documents the actual "worst gifts from administration," which include items such as nail polishes, bubble wrap for "stress relief," and a snow globe with pictures of administrators' faces flying around.
Gift cards are a real winner. Whittaker says that because teachers often have limited space or funds, store and restaurant gift cards "make nice gifts because they can use the cards for what they really want or need." Target and Amazon gift cards are popular, as are Visa gift cards.

This is made possible through the Weis Rewards program, which offers many ways to turn grocery savings into savings at the pump or checkout. When choosing a gas rewards program like Weis Fuel Rewards, you need to decide whether you want flexible rewards, gas savings, or both.
Some gas rewards programs only allow you to redeem your rewards for fuel discounts, while others have the ability to redeem points for snacks, drinks and more. Some rewards programs also allow you to choose how to redeem your rewards. In such a case, it is important to compare all available options.
Other factors worth considering when choosing a gas rewards program include; It's also worth noting that there is more than one way to get the tank reward. For example, you can join a gas station rewards program and sign up for a gas credit card.
This way, you get rewards on both sides of the equation. Remember that gas rewards programs are tied to the gas station you stop at. There are two types of gas credit cards: For this reason, it's a good idea to get a card that rewards all gas station purchases, and DoNotPay can help you with that.
