Paola Paronto rarely welcomes visitors to her workshop in Porcia, a small town in northwestern Italy in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, but, to mark her collaboration with Veuve Clicquot, she happily makes an exception for Wallpaper*. The project, coinciding with the champagne house's 250th anniversary, sees the ceramic artist create a new case and bottle for La Grande Dame, Veuve Clicquot's premium line, designed to honor the brand's 1805 leader, Barbe Nicole.

I fell in love with clay, a soft and delicate material that is difficult to tame but immediately fascinated me. She entered the world of ceramic art at a time when it was set in her ways: 'There was a kind of rule among ceramicists that you had to work in certain shapes or glazes,' she said.
After a while, I got frustrated and felt the need to push those boundaries." Her encounter with paper clay in 2000 was a game changer. "I had to work hard to find my personal approach and solutions for preserving static objects, to convey the image of movement and light, something not immediately related to ceramics."
Gift boxes designed by Paola Paronetto for Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2015 are handmade, using a long and partially secret process that involves adding paper pulp to a clay mixture, the parts of which are soft but structured. Available in a variety of textures inspired by nature—cartuccio (bosque), licio (molten), cortaccia (bark), reta (net)—and because they are opaque and non-glossy, the particles absorb the light and change color as the day goes on.

It will be displayed as part of Solaire Culture, a traveling exhibition that began in Tokyo and Los Angeles before arriving in London in May 2023. The commission led Paronto to push the limits: "The height of the large bottles is 1.35 m. My desire was to create long pieces, even for outdoor use, but I was far from achieving this goal, at least with paper clay," she said. "Then I met an Italian company that works on metal rods and prototypes and we started thinking about a group of glass between 4-6 meters."
These were first unveiled at the opening of La Grande Dame 2015 during the Salone del Mobile Installation of the Veuve Clicquot 'Solaire Culture' exhibition, in Tokyo, 2022.
