Frequent stalwart director Michael Landon Jr. shows great determination and even more stupidity in trying to build a behemoth-sized family saga with the production values of Sharknado. The endlessly boring end result faces bleak theatrical prospects on the way to endless reruns on the Hallmark Channel, where it forces even the mildest of viewers to stay awake and alert.
Three years after the events of "The Gift," busy young tycoon Jason Stevens (Logan Bartholomew, replacing Drew Fuller) hits a rough patch with his gf. Only a thorough reading of the journals of Alexia (Allie Hillis) and her deceased billionaire grandfather Red (James Garner, on screen for less than a minute) can bring him back.
So much of the film unfolds in flashbacks showing how Red (starring Drew Waters) went from rags to riches, taking an awfully long time to convey a terribly offensive message: Money only matters when you have someone you can hang out with. you share. that.

The largely suspenseful tone is briefly enlivened by attractive young performers Austin James as the teenage Red and Abigail Mawity as his wild love, Hannah's early stage. Unfortunately, after an odd detour to World War II (and a fight scene less authentic than what Max Fisher directed in Rushmore), the teenagers grow up and the focus is solely on grown-up Red's obsession with finding his oil fortune.
He's like Daniel Plainview, only meaner and less murderous. Meanwhile, Hannah (now played by Elizabeth Ann Bennet) inexplicably loses her spark and takes a backseat to caring for the couple's four surrogate children, as (apparently) any dutiful wife should. Beyond the frustrating gender politics, the picture's social agenda seems hopelessly confused.
Struggling to make ends meet during the Depression, Red learns a valuable Ayn Randy lesson from a wealthy landowner (Peter Fonda, on screen for about three minutes): Most people are sheep, while successful men ring bells. Only when he realizes that the unjustifiably greedy Red has selfishly amassed his own wealth (by being trampled upon or exploited by countless "sheep") does he realize that he has lost his soul.
So he immediately redeems it by creating a "fund" for generally altruistic purposes. At the very least, the narrative sloppiness of Brian Bird and Lisa G.
