Turo is a peer-to-peer car sharing platform that allows car owners to rent out their cars to regular people. Consider it a sort of Airbnb for cars. Given the high prices of car rentals and the often limited number of rental cars available, alternative car rental services like Turo can be a lifesaver. After all, the surge in car rental prices has been one of the biggest travel stories of the pandemic era, as they hit record highs in July 2021. The story of car rentals experiencing huge post-pandemic price increases continues. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, car rental prices rose 36% in January 2023 compared to January 2020, the last comparable month before the COVID-19 lockdown in the US, while peer-to-peer car-sharing platforms continued to grow in popularity. The global car-sharing market surpassed $2 billion in 2020 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 20% annually from 2021 to 2027, according to July 2021 data from market researcher Global Market Insights. But while Turo can provide a great alternative to renting a car, it's not necessarily the best. Here are a few times when you can book with Turo and what to look out for. Traditional car rental prices are particularly high compared to pre-pandemic times, but Turo's prices are more volatile. Sometimes they can be cheaper than traditional car rentals because the car owners set the prices. A car owner who currently works from home and has a minimal need for the car during the week may be inclined to make it available on Turo at a low price to make some extra cash or even get some mileage out of an otherwise idle car. Many owners offer discounts for longer trips, and some offer discounts to guests who book at least a week in advance. The total cost of a Turo rental can go up once additional fees start to apply. A 10-hour rental advertised for $30 a day can easily be double that. In this example, the mandatory trip fee is $15. Turo then adds standard protection for $12 by default (though you can opt out of damage protection). You can include extras like a pet fee ($40), child seat ($35), unlimited mileage ($80) or prepaid gas ($75). Here are some examples of Turo fees you can expect before departure: Turo Ride Fees. Turo adds a trip fee at checkout that goes to Turo (not the owner). Fees vary, but in the US the cost of the trip ranges from 2.5% to 100% of the total price. Turo Young Driver Fee. Persons under the age of 24 are required to pay a young driver fee (minimum of $50 per day if under 21, or $30 per day if under 25 in the US). Various additional services. You may also owe other fees, including airport fees, pickup or return fees, and extras like unlimited mileage (many rental locations have mileage limits). And the fees may not end there, which adds to why Turo may be wrong for people worried about potentially unknown costs. Compensation accounts. Landlords can invoice renters for fuel, overage, tickets and fees where applicable. Turo cleaning fee. If you return the car in a condition that violates Turo's cleaning and sanitizing policy, the owner may report the problem to the company. If Turo sides with the landlord, you'll owe $150 for the cleaning violation plus a 3% handling fee. Turo is clear that renters "should not clean or sanitize the car before returning it," but there's a gray area between what Turo considers normal wear and tear and what veers into violation territory. "Significant amounts of pet hair" is a violation, as is "large stains or residue," but "minor spills of food or drink" is fine. A number of tenants have documented the negative experience of receiving fines for violations they felt were unjustified, leading to calls to customer service to have the charges waived – or simply pay the fine. Turo offers three additional protection plans for an additional fee, each with increasing coverage: Minimum, Standard, and Premier. Prices in the US start at $10 per rental day, depending on the level of optional Turo insurance selected. Comparing and adding plans at checkout is pretty easy. You may opt out of coverage, but you (or possibly your personal insurance company, if covered) are responsible for all costs associated with physical, mechanical, and internal damage, as well as administrative fees and appraisal costs.
