Boys are raised to believe that so-called femininity represents a danger they must avoid. Boys learn early that if they engage in dangerous, disabling behavior in any way, they can be punished. These lessons are deeply rooted in our hearts when we are young and stay there forever.

Throughout life, expectations of masculinity are haphazard and often bordering on the absurd. I once saw a tweet from a woman who said she didn't like men ordering dessert because it was feminine to eat candy. One of my favorite Instagram accounts recently made a post asking its male followers to name behaviors they were told were feminine and therefore off-limits.
The list includes: wearing sandals, using sunscreen or an umbrella, having a cat, apologizing, pink and - this is my favorite - wind instruments. Many men wrote about things they were not allowed to do to their bodies, such as crossing their legs at the knees or putting their hands on their hips.
It's all very strict - and if people believe these things, it's partly because they hear warnings from their friends, their fathers and the culture at large at a very young age. But the reaction to Mulvaney's milestone reminds us how problematic these notions of masculinity can be.

If the traditional view of masculinity could be reduced to a recipe, I guess it would be one part stoicism, two parts anger, three parts lust and four parts femininity. This cocktail can be dangerous and can make it difficult for a man to process complex emotions, deal with negative emotions in a healthy way, and even express love.
Men need to move beyond the notion that dominating others and engaging in endless emotional stunts is the way to show their "manhood" to the world. This concept must be de-sexed. Maybe to some people manliness just means being assertive, assertive, not easily threatened, not being told what to do, what not to wear, who to love.
