Earlier this year, Kevin Luzande, former executive chef of Acre Restaurant in Los Cabos, Mexico, pioneered the Sendero project, which includes four culinary concepts. They join the Ritz-Carlton family's impressive portfolio of global restaurants that includes 13 Wine Spectator Restaurant Award winners.
The four restaurants draw on Ruzande's experience traveling the Pan-American Highway to Latin American countries along the Pacific coast. In fact, sendero is translated from Spanish as "path" and the concepts are literally connected. “As a native Angeleno surrounded by the Latino community, I have always been passionate about the food and culture of Mexico, Central America, and South America,” Roozand told Wine Spectator via email.

Inspired by Mexico's coastal Baja region, Cortesa focuses on seafood with dishes like Peruvian ceviche, Portuguese clams, shrimp and crab. Steakhouse Lenha has an Argentinian influence and serves wagyu steak, seafood, carpaccio and grilled provolone-style cheese (provoleta).

“Creating a unique menu for a four-course concept has been the most exciting challenge of my career,” explains Ruzande. "We hope our guests will discover and enjoy food that they can't find at other restaurants in Los Angeles." Next door opens Sendero's Agave Library. It's a semi-private area where guests can taste a collection of agave-based spirits, including tequila and mezcal, including rare bottles.

Complementing these drinks are foods like fiery chocolate skulls. Eric Intermill, the hotel's assistant director of food and beverage, lists Sendero's growing list of 220 labels. Wines from Argentina, California, Chile and Uruguay abound, including Mendoza Malbec, Napa Cabernet and Casablanca Valley whites. "The journey starts in California and ends at the southern tip of Chile," says Intermil, who has a variety of wines along his route.

"Our wine list will continue to grow as we release these rare, allocated wines and vintage versions of our library," Intermill explains.

Later, Eli's Table reopened in its longtime location on 3rd Avenue next to Eli's Market on New York's Upper East Side.Sideline Run by Wine Spectator Award-winning entrepreneur Eli Zabar, the restaurant remains a destination for wine lovers. Eli's Table first opened in 2003 under the name Amt, and was renamed in 2014 under its current name.

In Eli Zabar's own cellar (currently close to 60,000 bottles), the bottle list, which grows as the wine ages, totals more than 1,000 varieties.
