Growing up as a kid, Christmas was probably my favorite day. Because our family opens our presents on Christmas Day after going to church. Because of this, it was difficult for me to concentrate during the service because I was thinking about what gifts were waiting for me when I got home.

Will this be the year I finally get my hands on a remote control airplane? (This never happened). Maybe you are now. Maybe a special gift is waiting for you under the tree. Whatever that gift is, it pales in comparison to the many gifts that God has given us.

We look at the greatest of these gifts and find this gift described in John 1:14. John wrote in familiar words: "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, his glory as the only Son from our Father, full of grace and truth."
Tonight we will focus on the phrase "we stood together." There are so many mysteries in this simple sentence that the angels want to understand. In short, the greatest gift that God has given us is us. But to understand the magnitude of what John is saying here, we need to step back and look at the larger story of the Bible.
God's Presence with His People in the Old Testament When God created Adam and Eve, He placed them in a peaceful garden. He made the garden a special place on earth for Adam and Eve. Genesis 3 even shows that it was God's custom to visit Adam and Eve in the garden.

Imagine for a moment: God himself walked with Adam and Eve! It was a common occurrence for them to see God in all His beauty and glory. This all changed when they disobeyed God by listening to the serpent. It didn't take long for Adam and Eve to realize that they had made a catastrophic mistake.
Instead of experiencing a sense of power and wisdom, they experienced alienation—alienation from each other and, more importantly, from God. When the Lord came for His daily walk in the garden, instead of running to God, He ran to escape Him. When God finally confronts Adam and Eve about their sin, something very interesting happens.

As a final judgment for their sin, God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden. Instead of being in the presence of God, they were driven away from God and driven away from God Himself. God created cherubim, even angels, to prevent Adam and Eve from re-entering the garden.
Because God is holy, He cannot allow sinful men to come before Him. From that moment on, humanity was alienated from God. God instructed Moses to build the tabernacle as part of this covenant. This tabernacle was a portable tent that the Israelites built to meet with God. When the tabernacle was built, the Israelites surrounded it with a wall 150 feet wide and 75 feet wide.
The tabernacle itself was 45 feet, 15 feet wide, and 15 feet high. There were two separate compartments inside the tent. The first was called the Holy of Holies, where only priests could enter and perform priestly duties. But behind the tent was another compartment separated by a thick curtain.
This section is known as the Holy Place or the Most Holy Place. Inside was the Ark of the Covenant, where God descended in the form of a cloud to meet His people. But the catch was that only a holy priest could enter the Holy of Holies and only one day a year - the Day of Atonement.

At this point, we are far from the garden. Hundreds of years later, King Solomon built a temple in Jerusalem as a permanent dwelling place where God lived with his people. The structure resembled a large-scale tent. It has a gold covered altar which is 60 feet long, 45 feet wide and 45 feet high.
Behind it was the altar, which was 30 cubic feet, and the ark of the covenant was placed between two golden cherubim. As with the Tabernacle, only the High Priest could enter the Holy of Holies on the Day of Atonement. Again, although the temple was a magnificent building, God's coming could only be done by the high priest, and only once a year.
Finally, Solomon's Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in BC. It was destroyed in 586. When the Jews were deported. Although they returned 70 years later and rebuilt the temple, it was a pale shadow of Solomon's temple. Indeed, those who saw Solomon's temple and then wept when the foundation of the new temple was laid, wept because it was not what they remembered.
