The Gift Of The Magi Vocabulary - More Gifts' is a short story by the US writer O. Henry, whose real name was William Sydney Porter (1862-1910). His fables are satires, of the conversational kind, sometimes sentimental, and the outcome of surprising events. All these things have been sealed, and the 'Gift of Scholars' somehow combines them all.

Christmas Eve. Jim and Della are a couple living in a modestly furnished apartment in New York. They have little money. The story begins with Della being upset that she has one dollar and eighty-seven cents to spend on her husband's Christmas present. The narrator tells us that each couple has possessions they are proud of.
For Jim, these are the golden glasses that once belonged to his father and, before that, to his grandfather. Delia's prized possession is her beautiful hair. Delia goes to the women who sell hair. The woman agrees to buy Delia's hair for twenty dollars. Della bought a platinum fob with her new found money instead of a gold watch.

This costs twenty-one dollars, leaving eighty-seven cents worldwide. When he gets home, he starts braiding what's left of his hair to make it presentable. When Jim comes home, he is surprised by his wife's reaction, but when she tells him why she has to cut her hair, he kisses her and gives her the gift he bought her: two tortoiseshell gemstone combs that she fell in love with at the shop.

window . The combs are useless to her until her hair grows back, but at least Jim can give her gifts... But in the end, Jim tells Della that she sold her gold to pay for the expensive combs he bought for her. So now he has two combs but no hair to use, and he has a platinum ring and gold watch fobs which he no longer has.
Many of O's short stories. Henry, many of which are only five or six pages long, are characterized by new twists, and 'The Greatest Gift' is a common example of this work. In their quest to buy each other a dream Christmas present, Jim and Della gradually relinquish their gifts as they order: Della's hair comb (sold), and Jim's watch chain (sold).
As the narrator notes in the last stanza: The Magi, as you know, were wise, wonderfully wise, who brought gifts to the Father in the manger. They discovered the art of Christmas gift giving. They were wise, there is no doubt that their gifts were ingenious, perhaps their trade if they were duplicated.

Here I have told you a funny story about two idiots in a room who foolishly gave away the great wealth of their house. But Lord Henry does not invite us to laugh at their stupidity, but to celebrate their sacrifice. No, it was not foolishness, but wisdom, as the narrator says at the end of the story: But in the last words of the wise in these days it is said that of all those who give gifts, these two were the wisest.
All those who give and receive gifts are very wise. Yes, and the pain itself. They are magicians. Thus, in a way, the two wonders are bent at the end of "The Gift of the Magicians": the tincidunt twist that is most characteristic of the short O stories.

H. and the narrative 'twist' in which he dismisses our first response. - which naturally can be laughed at in the disagreeable manner of events discussed - and morally makes it a point for Jim and Della to behave wisely, even though they end up giving each other useless gifts.
This is all well and good, but it is important to note that the narrator does not explain why Jim and Della believe that the gift givers were the "purest" of all. No, the sages here insinuate that the Magi, the Zoroastrians, the astrologers, in the gospel of Matthew, visited the infant Jesus, and brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh: hence the title of the story.

But what makes Jim and Delia sad? And why, Lord? Didn't Henry tell us? was it because he wanted to make our minds, or did he think it was an explanation of himself? The latter seems more probable. Certainly the "moral" of "The Gift of the Magi" that he gives his birthday, and that Jim and Della clearly love each other and treat each other despite not having the money to buy the better things in life, is that love.
it is more valuable than property. When it comes to Christmas and buying gifts for our loved ones, that thing is very important. But there is much more to 'The Gift of the Magi' than this insidious old saying, which would bring the story back to feeling and rather a story about 'giving' being better than receiving, and 'love' than money.
Both expressions are relevant to the story, but what is also important is the sacrifice aspect of the two characters, and how to deal with it when they learn what it means. So Jim is happy to buy a piece of gold watch that has been passed down through the sea for three generations, while Della is happy to lose her hair (which will take months to fully grow, despite her protests).

a gift which he greatly desires. But in a twist of the story, they learn that their sacrifices, which they sacrificed for love for another, were in vain. But they are happy about this, not because of the act of buying a gift, but because of the great expense which he made for another.

Love, O. Henry, seems to say that it is most precious to leave your beloved, whom you love even more, as much as you show your devotion. That is what is wonderful about the 'Gift of the Wise' that not only is 'giving' better than receiving, but 'giving and losing' has nothing to do with it.
