Into the darkness of this world entered the light of God, Jesus Christ. Isaiah, in our lesson from the Hebrew Scriptures, calls aloud for the righteousness of God's people, that shines in the morning, salvation that burns like a torch. Or, as we have often heard, "those who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of darkness, light has dawned."

In the darkness of many difficult days, these words of comfort and joy lighten the heart. Surely this is a year that needs a message of hope and joy as Jesus was born. In the time of Mary and Joseph, the people yearned with all their might for liberation—from poverty, from the tyranny of the occupying Roman army, from Herod, the sick and sad tyrant who ruled their lives.
The number of religious fanatics was increasing all the time. People followed each news, only to be disappointed. In a world of chaos, war, police states like Israel under Herod, the Son of God came, the bringer of peace. It was a time of violence between the people and the governments.
Some began to despise their bodies and the things of this physical world. And a harsh rebuke comes from God with love, like a child showing us that our body and our world are holy, because God made them. Jesus brought a positive attitude to life and living.

Life was to be lived in covenant with God, not just endured. He came as a child who became a man who was crucified for us. Jesus is the light of the world. Arise, shine, for your light has come. Our world is illuminated by God's holiness.
There was a time in World War I when soldiers fought each other from their trenches. It was Christmas Eve. And a German soldier was heard singing "Silent Night" in German. The British soldiers started singing in English again. Soon, both sides broke into song and unofficial war was declared as soldiers joined each other under white flags in no-man's land.
And they celebrated Christmas together. When they return to the directions, they will not shoot each other. The enemy had a face now, and it looked like them. The troops had to switch sides because they were shooting at each other. Christmas is one way to do that.
It breaks down barriers and makes us aware of our relationship. I will tell you the story of a young man about 36 years ago in the cave of Bethlehem, which is under the Church of the Nativity. When he was there, in what tradition says was the birthplace of Jesus, he saw different crowds side by side, because it was a small place.
There were pilgrims from all over the world because they all loved the Lord. And a voice began to sing, in German, the Christmas carol we know as "Silent Night". And one by one, in the first languages of the assembled Christian crowd, came the glorious strains of "Silent Night."
