After years of friendship with Dunham's family and friends, Navy veteran David Kniss joined Army veteran Vince Vargas to tell the story of the men of Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, and the story of how Dunham sacrificed for your brothers "This movie is really by veterans, for veterans," Kniss shared, stressing how important it is that "they all understand the importance of telling this story."
“Many years ago I had a chance encounter with Corporal Dunham before I went to Iraq. This chance meeting led to lifelong friendships with the Dunham family and a core group of Marines who served with Corporal Dunham. I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly over the last 15 years...PTS, drug and alcohol abuse, and in some cases suicide.

A New Documentary Tells The Heroic Story Of The First Marine To Earn The Medal Of Honor Since Vietnam
In 2007, he became the first Marine from the Vietnam War to receive the Medal of Honor. In the years since his death, his story of courage and sacrifice has been told and retold. His Medal of Honor citation is read to Marine recruits during the Crucible at boot camp.
His name adorns the USS Jason Dunham, where his blue uniform is displayed in a clear case on the quarterdeck, a solemn shrine to a young man who gave his life for his brothers in arms. Now, the Marines who served with Dunham are sharing their story in their own words, and a small group of military veterans and filmmakers are helping them do so as part of The Gift, a crowd-funded documentary about his life and legacy. April 2004 Dunham was leading his squad in Husaybah, Iraq, searching for fighters who had just attacked his battalion commander's convoy. Marines stopped a number of vehicles to conduct a quick sweep, looking for insurgents trying to flee or regroup for another attack. Something caught Dunham's eye: a white SUV, three cars behind it.
As he made his way to the vehicle, his fellow Marines, Pfc. Kelly Miller and Lance Caple. Bill Hampton followed suit. When they approached the car, they noticed weapons in the back seat: an AK and an RPG. At that point, the driver jumped out and attacked Dunham.

Documentary Highlights Fallen Us Marine Jason Dunham's Sacrifice That Saved Fellow Marines
Both men fell to the ground in the scuffle. As Miller and Hampton ran to their commander's aid, they heard Dunham yell, “No, no! Keep your hand!” like a grenade rolled to the ground. The pin was thrown away and the spoon disappeared. Without hesitation, Dunham threw himself onto the grenade, covering it with his Kevlar helmet and body, taking the full brunt of the blast.
She survived the initial blast but succumbed to her injuries on April 22, 2004. Dunham was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on January 11, 2007. The gift not only aims to tell the story of Dunham's self-sacrifice, but aims to to explore the indelible marks he left on those who knew him and how they continued after his death.
Based on the trailer, the story will be told through present-day interviews with Dunham's family and the Marines he served with, including those whose lives he saved: Kelly Miller and Bill Hampton. “What we do with the given is how we honor those who have given.

The film seems to be as much about the heroism displayed that day as it is about the long, hard road that came after. "I became a person who took all this emotion, all this guilt, all this anger, all this frustration, and I put it in a little box and I just buried that bitch as deep as I could," Miller.
