The story of the film is similar to the short story "Monkey" by Stephen King, which leads many to believe that the creators of the film have plagiarized the story. In 1996, Burton re-released the film as the second story in Merlin's Mystical Wonder Shop, a horror/fantasy film.

An elderly woman named Elmira Johnson uses a Ouija board to communicate with the spirit of the dead. When Roohi is angry, he manifests himself in a cymbal-beating monkey toy. The monkey's eyes glow red and he uses his cymbals to send lightning into the old woman's house, possibly killing her.

Some time later, David Andrews, a single father from the suburbs, celebrates his young son Michael's ninth birthday. The boy receives the dress from David's girlfriend, Susan, who bought it at an antique shop. The monkey measures himself. Shortly after the party, David wakes up screaming from a nightmare in which he finds Michael dead in the bathtub.
After houseplants die and the family dog is mysteriously burned in their garage, David suspects the monkey is behind it. David hires Adrienne, a fortune teller, to exorcise his house, but she won't tell him about the monkey. Adrien asks her if she has a statue or an idol, and explains that demons often have objects that seem harmless, but they use them as outlets for their evil activities.

David realizes that this is what the monkey is and is sure that there is a demon in his house. He wants Adrien to come and perform an exorcism immediately. He tells her that he needs to know more about her condition before she can intervene.
She tells him that if he is a demon, he may not be able to help. David returns to the antique shop and the clerk tells him that a stranger brought him to the shop the week before after finding him in the ruins of the old woman's house.

The monkey showed no signs of fire damage, causing the employee to not believe the story. However, the secretary tells David about Elmira Johnson's recent death in a fire. David doesn't think so. When he gets home, he finds that Susan has been possessed by a monkey and is trying to drown Michael in the bathtub.

He picks up Suzanne and throws her out of her house, causing her to suffer head injuries. One of the neighbors witnessed the incident and called an ambulance. David decides to tell Adrien about the monkey. He tells her that he can help. However, she tells him that when a demon is in contact with someone who can see the future and talk to spirits, he goes crazy and "all hell will break loose" if he sets foot in her house.
He gives her a special necklace that will protect her from evil as long as she keeps it. He tells her to get rid of the monkey immediately. The boy's father throws the monkey away, but his son rescues it from the trash can and brings it inside the house.
After that the boy is almost hit by a car. The boy's father takes the monkey and tries to bury it, but it returns to the boy's house. The monkey then causes the violent death of the boy and his family. Sorry, we just need to make sure you're not a robot.
