Other students packed up a "teacher appreciation basket" and dropped it off at a nearby school. On March 15, the students and mentors split up and go about their various mercy missions. Many students cleared the forest. "It's my favorite day of the year with them," Thiessen said. "They're there to supervise, but I really get to sit back and watch them do their jobs." Plus, he added, "It's nice to see people smiling back at you."

While the goal of the project is to start a chain of kindness within the community (one person offered $20 toward next year's fundraiser, Thiessen said), it's also to show students what they can do. are capable of.
