About 150,000 people were killed in Banda Aceh in the tsunami of 26 December 2004. Some areas of the city were permanently submerged. Since then, many aid agencies have been on the scene to help with the recovery. The long-running conflict between the Aceh Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Army (TNI) was temporarily resolved by a peace agreement on 15 August 2005. The peace process has been relatively smooth since then.
In 2006, the province held its first direct and democratic local elections. In 2007, the first democratically elected governor, Irwandi Yusuf, took office. Banda Aceh has a tropical rainforest climate with an almost constant average temperature. The average annual temperature in the city is 27°C.
However, the city experiences wetter and drier seasons, with June to August being the driest months of the year. Banda Aceh has no real dry months with an average rainfall of less than 60 mm. On average, the city receives just under 2,000 millimeters of rainfall per year.
By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. A 30-day visa on arrival is available at Banda Aceh Airport. The Kuala Lumpur embassy can sometimes process the visa on the same day if you have all the paperwork ready by noon, although this should only apply to Malaysian residents.

There are direct night buses from Medan to Banda Aceh with travel times from 9am to 1pm. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. Prices range from IDR 110,000 for regular buses to IDR 200,000 for wide-seat buses.
Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journey is usually longer. The price is a bit cheaper than the coach. It is also possible to travel to Banda Aceh from Medan via Kuta Kane and Takengung. It will be 20 hours in total.
There are daily return flights between Banda Aceh and Medan (1 hour journey), Jakarta (2 hours 40 minutes journey) or Singapore (nearly 4 hours). There are no buses to the airport anymore. The only way to get into town is by airport taxi which costs a flat fee of IDR 100,000 (2019).

After leaving the arrival gate, the taxi counter is on the far left. Visa procedures at this airport are similar to other Indonesian ports of entry and exit. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port near Medan. Receives ships from Batam, Indonesia (shared route from Singapore).
Ferries from Penang no longer operate. From Ulhee-lhee, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh. The main modes of transportation are becak (motorcycle taxi) and labi-labi (lighting buses). Locals, who were used to overcharging due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, have now stabilized.

At the height of the post-tsunami relief effort, there were 850 NGOs, but many were non-Muslim religious organizations and were not renewed by the Indonesian government. There is an interesting fish, meat and vegetable market in the city center.
There are also several small souvenir shops selling various local items. Hermes Palace Shopping Center is located in the center of Banda Aceh. The mall has more than 100 stores, including food courts, supermarkets and clothing stores. The staple of breakfast in Aceh is nasi gurih, a rice dish cooked in coconut milk that is available in cafes across the country.
Padang food stalls and restaurants dot the unspoiled parts of town, and there are fruit carts everywhere. There are some nice cafes around Ulee Kareng with soothing views of the rice paddies, along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of town. In the city center you will find three fast food chains, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.
