Athens is the proud home of the Georgia State Botanical Garden, Georgia's official botanical garden. The garden is one of Athens' most visited attractions and a must-see on any trip. There are many themed gardens that offer beauty, tranquility and inspiration any time of the year. You'll find art installations in the gardens and in the tall, three-story tropical conservatory. Special events at the Georgia State Botanical Garden include the Sunflower Music Series, other live music performances, nature walks, and workshops during the summer months.

1. Start At The Tropical Conservatory And Visitor Center

There is also the Shade Garden, the Native Flora Garden, the Flower Garden, and the Herb and Physics Garden. The newest attraction in the garden opened in March 2021 and features eight different gallery spaces that combine conservation, botany, art, beauty and weirdness. Adjacent to the building is the Garden of Discovery and Inspiration, where visitors can access the living botanical collection represented in the museum's many porcelain pieces.

The Georgia State Botanical Garden has been designated an "Important Birdwatching Area" by the Georgia Audubon Society, so there are many must-see bird species in the garden. Get an identification card from the receptionist of the visitor center showing which birds consider our area to be their home.

2. Stroll Through The Themed Gardens

The garden also has a 21-marked Hummingbird Trail that shows where hummingbirds love to hang out. The hiking trail is open from May 1 to early October. The garden features more than 8 miles of nature trails, most of which follow the Middle Oconee River.

You will see a wide variety of native plants, trees and wildlife. Look for old red maple and sycamore trees, wildflowers, deer, turkeys, owls, and even otters. The seven tracks vary in length and difficulty. Kindergarten opened in 2019 and is designed as a hands-on learning and entertainment environment.

Kids can explore what roots look like underground, climb a spider web, discover a new vegetable, dig for dinosaur bones and discover the hidden world of worms. It is also home to the Garden Club of Georgia headquarters, located on the grounds of the State Botanical Garden.

This beautiful and intimate chapel is built on the side of a scenic cliff leading to the Middle Oconee River. Surrounded by trees and built from cypress trees, the Day Chapel is both fascinating and inspiring. The log chapel can be rented like any other building on the site.

The cafe offers light food such as sandwiches, snacks and drinks.
