I wanted a vegan backpack and found a rather crudely made bag with such a unique design. I took the bag home with me and in America people stopped me on the street saying how much they loved my bag. I traveled around Sumatra again for a documentary series on natural medicine and healing.
One day I again came across the embroidered designs that you now see on Banda Bags. I really had to know where they came from, so I traveled to the countryside and met the women who create such unique designs. They were great artisans who created quirky and unique hand embroidered designs and I was fascinated by their crafts.
I knew right away that I had to start working with these women who seemed to create designs like magic. My search for these magical and unique patterns led me to the village of Banda in the Sumatra region of Aceh. If you've been paying attention to the news for the past fifteen years, you'll remember that this is the site of the world's worst recorded tsunami.
Traveling Sumatra, Running Into A Unique Design
The earthquake that shook the area literally shook the earth off its axis. The subsequent tsunami devastated the area and killed more than two hundred thousand people. I came after this disaster and ten years have passed since it. Looking around, I could only imagine that it had only happened a week ago.

I couldn't believe that these beautiful embroidery designs were born here. One day I had an idea that I could introduce these unique designs to the world and help these women stuck in a situation that has not improved for years. This remote area had very little chance of economic recovery, but I knew the world would appreciate it.
We've collaborated to create a cruelty-free vegan bag that can grace the runway and the checkout line. The weekend bag was born. Shortly after the creation of the weekend, we came up with the Nano. This is a vegan leather handbag that really makes a statement.
Then we created a vegan backpack that everyone can carry. The vegan backpack is nice and just the right size for all the essentials. The shell bag is a unique design that we came up with because we've never seen anything like it. There is nothing like it yet.
A Second Run-In
Our vegan wallets take on familiar shapes, but the design is completely Banda. We are constantly playing with new ideas and want to be one of the most innovative vegan fashion and cruelty-free companies on the planet. Banda Bags helped increase the economic opportunities of tsunami victims.
When I started Banda Bags, I did so by starting a company that pays fair wages and ensures the safety and well-being of artisans. I also wanted a sustainable and cruelty-free bag. The weekend bag and all our styles are made from the highest quality vegan leather.

Banda Bags does not use any animal products, so our bags are 100% vegan. Our vegan leather handbags are handmade from selected materials that we constantly strive to renew. We are currently looking for ways to make our bags more environmentally friendly. This means purchasing more recycled materials and innovation in production.
There are a variety of great materials that could one day replace the vegan leather we use today. We're talking about ingredients made from all natural sources, including pineapple. We're even looking into ways to make yarn out of plastic pulled from the ocean! I guessed correctly that people would love the unique designs I found in Indonesia.
