But it's not just a violent and disturbing festival. The Squid Game is also an excellent metaphor for the evils of capitalism. One of the reasons it's so popular is that so much love and focus is put into the show. "Squid Game" is full of subtle hints and easter eggs.
Small details matter, everything from the color of a contestant's uniform to the designs on a worker's mask are symbols with a deeper meaning. This is a show that is sure to reward multiple views. Here's one more detail that probably didn't catch your attention: the coffin.
Whenever a contestant or worker dies, they are placed in a black coffin wrapped with a pink bow like a large gift box. Like many other details in "The Squid Game," there's a deeper reason why the coffin looks the way it does. In an interview with Netflix Korea (via YouTube), "The Squid Game" production designer Chae Kyung Sun explained the importance of gift box coffins.

I think it centers on the minds of the people who create the games," she said. "I think he's going to think he's giving the contestants a chance, like he's God. 'This is my gift to you. It's a mercy even if your dead bodies are thrown into the incinerator.' So I thought, if
Where do I put tape on it?" This lines up with what we know about that character, Il-nam, aka "The Old Man," aka rival #001 (Oh Yeong-su). When he first appeared on the show, he appeared to be just another contestant who seemed to die in episode 6.
It was later revealed that not only was he dying of terminal cancer - he was also the game's creator. As he explained to Sung Ki-hoon (Lee Jung-jae), the reason he makes these games is because he's bored. In fact, competing was a way for him to get his adrenaline pumping, even though he was never in danger like the other contestants.
The fact that Il-nam is willing to organize a twisted series of children's games to entertain himself speaks volumes about the grim way he sees other people's lives. Cremating the contestant in a literal gift box shows just how depraved he really is. The main character, Sung Ki-hoon, desperately tries to retrieve the gift box from the slot machine in the first episode, only to be killed by a child. In the cinderblock room, the officer found a bow-tie gift box filled with all the information about the game.
All the coffins look like gift boxes with bows hanging from them. There are other gift boxes with bows, but always off center. Has anyone seen anything that would explain this symbolism? It happened too many times without any sense behind it. I've always thought of gift boxes in sorting machines as a harbinger of things to come.
But for the coffin show, the art director himself revealed (via sportskeeda): Chae Kyung Sun, the show's art director, revealed that she sees design as the creator of the game, saying, "I think I focus on the thoughts of the people who create the game. I

Think he'll think he's giving the contestant a chance like he's God." And since the maker loves to be God and have fun with people in debt, his farewell was a great gesture too. The art director let her imagination run wild and wondered if the game's creators would think so when they said goodbye: "This is my gift to you. Even if your corpses are thrown into the incinerator it is my mercy."
Director Hwang Dong Hyuk also revealed that he is also a fan of BLACKPINK, adding in the art director's comments, "The main colors of the manager are black and pink, so I combined these tones just like BLACKPINK." To subscribe to this RSS feed , copy and paste this URL into your RSS reader.
