Spiritual Gift Exhortation - Teaching is not a word we use very often. However, for some reason, many Bible translators (such as the ESV) continue to use it in Romans 12 to describe spiritual gifts. Some versions of the Bible, such as the NIV, use "enthusiasm," which sounds more natural to our modern ears.

But does that mean? Exhortation, of course, includes enthusiasm, but it does not end there. Merriam-Webster defines exhortation as "language intended to provoke and encourage." Encouragement is based on kindness and hope. It builds trust in others. It calms them down when they feel tired.
The sermon is filled with the same kindness and hope, but then he takes it a step further—compelling the audience to action. Rather than offering vague instructions, preaching speaks specifically to a person's situation and urges them to do the right thing. Teaching is based on truth.
It is not passive about sin. But it always affirms God's ongoing work in another person and always has hope for their future. It inspires man to grow and become what God created him to be. If we have different talents according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith;
What Is The Difference Between Exhortation And Encouragement?

The ESV word translated "hope" here is the Greek word parakles, and it is found in many other passages of the New Testament. In 2 Corinthians 1:3-7 paraklis appears nine times and is translated by the ESV as "rest."

Interestingly, it comes from the same root as parakletos, the word used to describe the Holy Spirit in John 14. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of everything I told you (John 14:26 NIV).
In other versions, parakletos is translated as helper or comforter, and the more we read in scripture, the more we see the thread of paraklis (hope) in the role of the Holy Spirit. Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weaknesses. We do not know what we should pray for, but the Spirit himself makes supplications for us (Romans 8:26 NIV, emphasis added).
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13 ESV, emphasis added). Then the church in Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace and was strengthened.
What Is The Difference Between Exhortation And Encouragement?
Those living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit increased in number (Acts 9:31 NIV, emphasis added). But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak for himself; He will only speak what he hears, and tell you what is yet to come (John 16:13, NIV, emphasis added).
And I will put my spirit in you and make you obey my commandments and carefully observe my laws (Ezekiel 36:27 NIV, emphasis added). The sinful nature desires to do evil, which is contrary to the Spirit. And the Spirit gives us desires that are contrary to the desires of the sinful nature (Galatians 5:17a NLT, emphasis added).

The Holy Spirit is our Parakletos - our Comforter, Advocate and Helper. And in this role, he gives us hope, encouragement, and motivation to follow God. He is absolutely right, but nowhere in scripture does he condemn us. Instead, it reminds us of who we are as children of God, which causes us to turn from sin and do good.
This is why in Romans 12 parakles is often translated as exhortation. This is the kind of encouragement that not only comforts us but also makes us do the right thing. Now we know what a perfect sermon looks like. But what is the teaching of an imperfect man?
How Do You Give Exhortation?
None of our human brains have all the answers. We're bound to meet people we don't know how to help. But by learning to walk in love and truth in the Spirit, we can prepare for every situation with the right heart—even if we don't have all the answers.
Galatians 5 is a guide to walking with the Spirit. Here are the last three verses of the chapter that sum it all up: Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk with the Spirit.
Let's not be arrogant, provoke each other and be jealous. This passage warns us of two traps: sinful desire and pride. Any of these can lead us out of the Spirit and, in turn, undermine our teaching. If we become tolerant of sin, we risk becoming supporters rather than teachers.

We risk creating a culture that encourages anything and everything that will allow sin to take root deeply in the body of Christ. Teaching without truth is the only fuel for the growth of sin. But we must also be careful in dealing with sin.
How Do You Give Exhortation?
If we become arrogant and self-righteous, we defeat the purpose of teaching, using the truth to tear others down rather than build them up. Teaching without love causes bitterness, envy and strife in society, weakening and isolating the body of Christ. That is why Paul emphasizes walking in the Spirit.
It is impossible to walk by the Spirit and be comfortable in sin (Galatians 5:17). And it is impossible to love the Spirit without loving our brothers and sisters in Christ (1 John 4:20). Teaching is a spiritual gift and it is only by the Spirit that we can teach as Ephesians 4:15 calls us to do.
Speaking the truth in love, we must grow up into Christ in every way" (Ephesians 4:15 ESV). Now that we know what the spiritual gift of teaching is, how do we know we have it? There are countless spiritual gifts tests available online. Sometimes they confirm and enhance our understanding of how to use our gifts.
Other times, they offer new information. The test question often helps us think about how God has used us in the past and what areas of ministry we are most passionate about. These are good questions, and they can reveal passions and talents that we don't appreciate or tap into.
