I found myself traveling through Sumatra again to film a documentary about natural medicines and healing. One day I came across the embroidery patterns that you now see on Banda bags. I had to find out where they came from, so I went to the village and met the women who made such unique designs.
These are amazing artisans who have developed unique and interesting hand-embroidered designs and I was amazed by their craftsmanship. I knew right away that I had to collaborate with these women who seemed to make this design so amazing. My quest for this magical and unique design brought me to a village in the Banda Aceh region of Sumatra.

Traveling Sumatra, Running Into A Unique Design
If you've been paying attention to the news for the past fifteen years, you'll remember that this was the site of the world's worst tsunami ever. The earthquake that rocked the area shook the earth off its axis. The ensuing tsunami devastated the region, killing more than two hundred thousand people.
I came after this accident and it's been ten years since it happened. Looking around, I can imagine what happened a week ago. I can't believe these beautiful embroidery patterns have appeared here. One day it occurred to me that I could bring these unique designs to the world and help women who have been stuck for years without improvement.
This remote area has little chance of economic revitalization, but they have something the world appreciates. We worked together to develop a vegan and cruelty-free bag that will grace the runway as well as the checkout counter. The holiday bag was born. After building the car over the weekend, we came up with the Nano.
