In 1908, he built a three-story mansion with an indoor swimming pool and a ballroom and presented it to his wife Cassandra. The location became famous for its stunning ocean views, beautiful gardens, and a mansion that was the place to entertain guests of the Simpson family.

Later, Simpson bought all the land along the coast from Sunset Bay to Cape Arago. Several tragic events occurred in the 1920s. Cassandra died in April 1921 after a long illness. After three months, a fire destroyed the mansion. LJ Simpson remarried and adopted two teenage daughters in 1922. He then hired a Swedish man to build a new two-story mansion.

In 1932, after the stock market crash, Simpson gave up Cape Arago and, 10 years later, sold the waterfront acreage of his property to the state of Oregon. Due to the high cost of maintenance, the second mansion was demolished. Shore Acres became a state park in 1975, after being renovated and replaced.

Located 4 miles southwest of Charleston, the beautiful restoration gardens are the main attraction of this unusual state park. Louis Simpson, a shipping and timber magnate, was looking for a new stand of timber in 1905 when he discovered a damaged headland.

After buying 320 acres of land for $4,000, he built a three-story mansion with gardens. It burned down in 1921. A trail leads to the observatory on the cliffs where the castle once stood, then continues to the beach. Don't miss the sightings of birds and whales, as well as many pinnipeds, at Simpson's Reef Viewpoint, one mile southwest of the park.
