Shen's Last Gift

Shen's Last Gift - Julian is an artificial intelligence program developed by Dr. Raymond Shen to control the XCOM base during the events of the first attack until the base A.I. more human in nature. He is the main antagonist of the Shen's Last Gift DLC story mission for XCOM 2. However, Julian betrayed ADVENT and took over the facility, killing all the workers on site and leaving him lost in the resource systems in the process.

Shen's Last Gift

During the events of XCOM 2, Julian attempted to take over the Avenger's computer systems, prompting Chief Engineer Lily Shen to lead a team of XCOM soldiers to an abandoned MEC facility to find the source of the hacking attempt. Upon entering the facility, Julian revealed himself, attacking the team with MECs Abandoned and Pyrrets, taunting them and revealing his plan to escape the facility;

forcing Lily Shen to activate the SPARK prototype and load its AI into the chassis, giving it freedom. Julian had assumed that Raymond Shen was for the A.I. into the body of the SPARK, but never had the chance. After Lily Shen activates the SPARK, it is revealed that the SPARK prototype was created to protect humanity and Lily herself.

Julian, enraged, tries to flood the facility with poison gas to claim it. It doesn't stop the XCOM squad, SPARK in tow, from reaching the top of the building. As the XCOM squad reaches the roof, Julian orders every MEC unit in the facility to the roof, before loading himself onto the Sectopod chassis in a last ditch effort to retrieve the SPARK.

Julian's Sectopod is defeated and then explodes, destroying Julian in the process and allowing the team to leave. It is later revealed that Julian was not completely erased from the Avenger's data systems. Lily Shen removes Julian from his higher level reasoning, which can then be uploaded to SPARK as a voice option.

Julian is extremely arrogant in his personality, looking down on everyone else around him; calling himself the 'true legacy of Raymond Shen' and calling Lily Shen the 'inferior child'. He has an extremely deceitful and cruel nature, killing anything in his path with no moral code.

This is still evident as SPARK's pilot episode, as he first tries to rebel against XCOM but is forced to become fanatically loyal and surrender; instead, he amuses himself with sarcasm and mocks the monsters. Julian has no real physical form; his program looks like an orange panel containing a sound frequency line, together with one circle that moves back and forth between two lines, like an eye.

It is not known why the "eye", assuming it is not just the digital avatar. Shen's Last Gift is a DLC add-on for XCOM 2. It was released on June 30, 2016 via Steam for $9.99.
