These fabric gift bags are a great way to personalize your gifts this year and still use your favorite prints from your fabric stash... Step Two: Take a piece and press the interfacing to the wrong side (WS). This will be the outer bag. step three
fold the outer bag fabric in WS in half widthwise and along the folded edge draw two corner boxes, 5cm (2in) wide and 4cm (15⁄8in) deep. step four Cut the boxes along the lines drawn across the two layers of folded fabric. step five Repeat this with the other piece of fabric that will be used for the bag lining.
step one Fold the elastic in half to create a loop, then add the ends to the back right side (RS) of the outer fabric piece, centering it over the top edge. The ends of the elastic should match the raw edges of the fabric.

step one Open the outer and lining fabric pieces and place them towards the RS. step three Open the fabrics and match the seams. step four Sew together along the side edges, leaving the cut boxes at the corners unsewn. Leave 8 cm (3 inches) unstitched in the center of one side to pull the bag out the back later.

Using fabric you have on hand or on sale, this is an inexpensive way to wrap gifts in a fun and special way. When I start a new sewing project, I always like to wash, dry and press the fabric first. Especially when the fabric is cotton.
Why Make Your Own Gift Bags?
That way, if you have to wash it after it's done, there's less chance of shrinkage. Do not skip this step as it is essential for any sewing project. Measure and cut a 13" x 11" rectangle of fabric (this measurement is for a 6" square bag; see the Tips section for more bag measurements). If you press this folded edge well, you don't need to fold it. However, you can if you want to. With the newly folded edge on the right side, slide the fabric under the presser foot of the machine. Sew very close to the first folded edge.

your seam allowance should be about 1/8 inch. Then pull the fabric from the machine, cutting the threads. Measure from the line you just sewed and mark a line 3/4 inch apart on the folded piece of fabric. Back to the sewing machine. Sew directly above the line you marked in the last step.
This creates the lanyard strap pocket. You're halfway there with your DIY drawstring fabric gift bag. Now fold the fabric to bring the right sides of the fabric together. The fold should be at the top and the lines you sewed before should meet at one edge.
First, pin the fabric along the raw edges to hold it together. You will now sew with a 1/2 inch seam allowance along the edges of the top raw material to the seam line. Then leave the 3/4 inch section open (the pocket you made for the cord) and resume sewing from the second row.
Be sure to tape at the beginning and end of the seam every time. Cut the corner for easier turning. You can also trim the excess fabric along the line you sewed if you want, just make sure you don't cut the stitches.
