But the good news is, you don't need a roll of wrapping paper to decorate your gift. Cloth gift bags have become very popular in the last few years, and they are easy to make. Plus, once you make it, you can reuse it year after year (unlike wrapping paper that will be shredded and thrown away).

We'll show you how to make large and small fabric gift bags that you can use for any occasion. Follow these simple instructions on how to make your own crochet bag. You should make a gift bag within an hour. For each bag, you need two pieces of fabric.

We recommend using a cotton cloth (or easy-to-wash cloth) so that you can easily wash it if needed. Cut two pieces of fabric for each bag. For a large bag, cut two 12 x 18 inch pieces. For the smaller bag, cut two 7 1/2 x 11 inch pieces.

iron cloth if needed. On both pieces of fabric, fold one short side up 1/4 inch. Press with an iron and sew with a sewing machine. Measure from the top of the hemmed three inches on both sides, and insert a straight pin. With a 5/8 inch seam allowance, sew from the nailed down area on one side, down, and up the other side to the printed area.

Use pinking shears ($14, Michaels) to cut three raw pieces. Press open a 3-inch space at the top of the bag on both sides, then seal both sides. Fold the edges up and down the inside of the bag to a 3-inch starting point. Press with a pin, then repeat on the other side.

Sew along the hemmed edge, using the stitched line as a guide. Then sew along the top edge using the presser foot to receive the seam. (This creates a channel to add the ribbon.) If you are making a small bag, turn right and skip to step 6. If you are making a large bag, you will need to make a box on the bottom before adding the ribbon.

To make a box on the bottom, pull the side of the fabric under the corner of the bottom to make a knot; measure 2 inches from the spot and draw a line. This will create a triangle shape. Sew this line, then repeat in the other corner.

Step-By-Step Directions

Cut with pinking scissors. To make the zipper, turn the bag right side out and add a safety pin to the end of the ribbon. You will need about 2 pieces of tape for each method. Move to one direction and back to the other direction, then repeat on the other side.

When you're done, you're ready to fill the bag. After adding your gift, close the bag and tie a ribbon in the bow. Check out 34 great bag sewing patterns - all free, and you'll love sewing them!
