Scratch Off Gift Ideas
For her most recent birthday, I wanted to give my child an experiential gift that allowed me to spend time with her doing two of her favorite activities. I picked nine independent bookstores, most of which we've never been to before (gasp!), and are within driving distance of our house.
I put these bookstores on a scratch! Whenever we have a free afternoon, my kid can scratch off a box and we'll go hang out, browse, and buy a book or two at whatever bookstore is downstairs! A scratch card is a really fun way to display all kinds of experience gifts or fun activities.

Everyone loves a scratch-off, it adds an element of surprise that makes an already great gift even better. Best of all: You'll already have everything you need to make it! You can decorate the whole card at this point or just scratch the parts. Use pencil, ink or paint, or design and print your card digitally.

Once you're happy with the look of the scratch going under the paint, cover each scratch area with clear packing tape. This smooth surface helps paint scrape off instead of sticking. You can technically cover or laminate your entire card with packing tape. I don't like the shiny look on the top of the rest of my cards, so I always try to cut the packing tape to fit the scratched area.
The ratio of scratch paint is about one part dish soap to two parts paint. However, you don't need to worry too much about your measurements. I find this ratio works well with random dish soap and whatever random acrylic paint I have on hand.

Mix well until the color is well combined and put it in a small container with a lid. You will be painting several coats over several hours, so you don't want your scraps to dry out. This step is very time consuming, but all the hours are mostly drying time.
Basically, you'll run a coat of paint over the packing tape, wait for it to dry, and then repeat until your scratch is opaque. Of course, the thicker the layers of paint, the longer each subsequent layer will need to dry. To help the last two layers dry faster, I sometimes lay my scratchy clothes on an easel and aim a fan at them.
Step 1: Create The Parts Of The Scratch-Off That Go Underneath The Paint.
It was unseasonably warm and muggy when I made this special summer birthday present. Without this trick, I might still be waiting for the last coat of paint to dry! When the paint dries, your scratch is ready to peel off! The paint didn't stick or bleed, even in the humid Indiana sunlight, but I like to cut some wax paper to fit when I put it in an envelope.

It's also fun to include a novelty or printed quarter for the recipient's year of birth. There are lots of fun uses for a DIY scratch pad. As you can see here, this is a great way to make an experience gift more special, but you can also use it to separate smaller gifts or rewards.
Paint the numbers with a sharpie and use it as a display calendar! Put a fun activity under each square and use it to choose what to do during family time. Write your favorite restaurants and let the waffle not choose where to eat. Laminate the pages of a Richard Scarry BC World book, cover various sections with dark paint and quietly entertain a toddler during a big meeting.
I'm a writer, creator, zombie preparedness designer, and homeschooling mom of two who I hope will one day use their talents for good, not the evil machinations and mayhem currently involved. I'm also interested in recycling, natural crafts, food safety, STEM education and the DIY lifestyle, but this one is obvious - make some underwear out of t-shirts?
