This South Texas shrine is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in the state, welcoming more than a million visitors each year. The devotion to the Virgin of San Juan del Valle originated from a miraculous event in the Cathedral of San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico, near Guadalajara.

When they arrived here in the 16th century, Spanish missionaries placed a small statue of the Immaculate Conception in the Church of San Juan de los Lagos. In 1623, during a circus practice, the son of an acrobat who was involved in the circus lost his balance and was killed.
The guardian of the church persuaded her parents to place a statue of the Virgin Mary on the body of their daughter and pray for the intercession of the Holy Virgin. Suddenly the child woke up. Word spread throughout the region and beyond, and devotion to Our Lady of San Juan spread throughout Mexico (including Texas, which was then part of Mexico).
An artist from Guadalajara, Mexico, was commissioned to create a replica of the statue worshiped in San Juan de Los Lagos, which was first installed in the San Juan Chapel during the construction of the cathedral. Built in 1954, the temple was badly damaged in 1970 when a small plane crashed into the cathedral and caught fire.

About Our Lady Of San Juan Del Valle:
At that time, about 50 priests were leading a joint mass for the attendees. No one was injured except the pilot who miraculously died in the crash. Apparently, the pilot flew the plane to the church on purpose. No interest found. The cathedral was rebuilt and the remaining statues were put back in place.
The cathedral has a hotel, restaurant, gift shop, and more. Several Masses are celebrated in English and Spanish on weekdays, and more on Saturdays and Sundays. Check the official website for details and times. There is not only a Liturgy of the Hours, but also a daily Confession.
