God's Initiative

Confessions of France, XX II. It is our conviction that in God's undeserved kindness lies the only hope of salvation for mankind. We believe that no man's struggle, or labor, or works of righteousness that we can do, can earn merit with God. We also believe that God does for us what we cannot do for ourselves and that in Jesus Christ he has broken the reign of sin and death and made salvation accessible to everyone.
With the cross, God reconciled the sinful world to himself; now he offers his gift of salvation to everyone. If we would grasp the Bible's plan of salvation from the Bible, we must first realize our dire need. Sometimes men and women show noble deeds individually and in society at large, from a divine point of view we are condemned, individually and collectively.
We are rebels in heart, and rebels in action; even our righteous ones are as "filthy rags" in the sight of God (see Isa. 64:6, K.J.V.). * Although our first parents were created in the divine image, that image is damaged: "The whole head is sick, and the whole heart is weak" (chapter 1: 5, 6).
God's Initiative
As God's searching eye surveys mankind, the verdict is: "'No man is righteous, no, not one.' "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Rom. 3:10, 23). . And the law cannot help us. Even when we try to justify ourselves in God's presence by immediately obeying His commandments, we fall short.
Jesus, explaining the law, showed that he himself examines our motives and opinions, our secret desires (see Matt. 5:17-48). He showed that love is the heart of the law - supreme love for God and love for our neighbor as ourselves (see chapter 22:34-40). So the law demands a standard that we cannot reach;

instead of saving us, it makes us look inadequate. "For no one will be justified in his own eyes by the works of the law, because it is through the law that knowledge of sin comes" (Rom. 3:20). We confess that we are lost without God (see Luke 15).
We are estranged from God, estranged from each other, estranged from our environment. We don't do what we should or want; we do what we shouldn't do. Not only do we fall short of God's bar, but we are helpless prisoners of sin, inside and out (see Rom. 7:14-23).
Centrality Of The Cross
As inappropriate for modern people as this description may be, it is nevertheless a biblical picture of the human condition. Only when we feel this loss, our desperate need for help from outside ourselves, can we appreciate the way to salvation. Because this is the second great truth about salvation: God does not leave us in our loss.
He comes to us, sacrifices his salvation. He does for us what we cannot do. He saves us - from guilt, from condemnation, from the glory of sin. Through the Scriptures, God takes the initiative to save men and women. The first question in the Bible that he asks is sent to our first parents when they hide from him: "'Where are you?'" (Gen. 3:9).
Since the first flight of Adam and Eve we have escaped; since the first call of God that he called. The Lord intervenes to free the Hebrew tribes in slavery (see Ex. 3:6-10); He also brings them back home from the Babylonian exile (see 2 Chron. 36:22, 23).

However, the highest action of God is in Jesus Christ. "God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life" (John 3:16). The Eternal Word, He who always was and will be fully God, became flesh, and pitched His tent among us (see John 1:1, 2, 14).
Centrality Of The Cross
He did not automatically accept to maintain his position, but took "the form of a servant, born in the likeness of men" (Phil. 2:6, 7). One with us, he shared our sorrows, suffered our trials, knew our worries and requests, and was tempted in all ways as we are (see Heb. 2:18 4:15).
Yet in every trial He arose without sin; He was "a lamb without blemish or spot" (1 Peter 1:19). Great as Christ's life was in total obedience to God's will, it led inevitably to Calvary. To counter the mystery of sin God would give the mystery of the cross.
On the hill of Golgotha, God took the punishment of our sin upon himself, suffering the destruction and despair of the "second death" (Revelation 21:8). The testimony of Scripture is "Christ died for our sins" (1 Cor. 15:3). He died the death we had so we could have the life he had.
For us he made himself to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Cor. 5:21). For us, the cross is in the middle. This is the decisive moment in history when God showed his judgment on sin and gave salvation to the world.
