Scrobble From Spotify?
There may be additional requirements. Big Thief is a quiet folk rock band. It was preceded by the profoundly thoughtful singer/songwriter Adrian Lenger, who didn't care too much about acting. Ten minutes before kick-off for the new star of Alston's new Roadrunner club, a fast-moving line continues to drag down the block and around the corner.
But this sold-out crowd of 3,500 isn't for pop princess Olivia Rodrigo or Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio, who will soon be at the same venue. Last Wednesday's attraction was Big Thief, a massive folk-rock band performed by Adrian Lenger, a contemplative singer/songwriter who doesn't care too much about transparency.
Buck Meek, drummer James Krivsenia and bassist Max Olertchik played on stage in dim light. Instruments and amps arranged simply in a small alcove. It's more like a living room jam than a stand-up rock hall. Band members sometimes face each other instead of the crowd.
And sometimes even Lenker or Oliartsyk crouched or sat down to face the drum kit. That close attention points to how they recorded Big Thief's new double album Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You in four studios in traditional settings across the country.

What Is Scrobbling?
The band surveyed the whole ensemble and beat it out for being one of the best songs of the year (see ArtsFuse review here). Contrary to expectations at Roadrunner, the quartet kicked off the 85-minute set with an A-style burn of the song. The slow acoustic "Transition" opens like an album, with Lenger acting solemn as if he had just cut his hair.
Before drilling to "Dried Roses", however, electric guitars began to appear. Creating three tracks that were intense in the mid-range, Lenger delved into "Black Diamonds" with a tone more intense than 2017's talent, even shouting, "You're the best!" "I'll Never Let Him Go" The new "Flowers of Blood" cuts through its acoustic shield, as Kryvsenia straddles her drum kit and turns the cymbal beat into a relaxed hi-hat for more dynamic.
Then comes the Big Thief's performance "Knot", which Lenger attempts to explain through denial. Finished off with an equally frenzied guitar koda, the band closest to Crazy Horse, with Lengar playing Neil Young. It was as if she was working through emotions regardless of the emotions of the listeners.
Leaving a high note as she steps to the edge of the stage and raises the neck of the guitar to acknowledge the strum to the congregation. The music stops when it's finished. To some extent, the scene slows down from that point. Take the risk of changing the music like Big Thief does every night to add some spontaneity.
