I went through all the procedures to submit them to Royal as shown in the certificates and they refuse to pay for my upcoming trip. I spent more time on the phone with Royal today and they said their team is working on it in another 3-5 days.
My advice to anyone who thinks they can save a few bucks by buying discounted gift cards is to think twice, because you could end up spending hundreds of dollars and wasting time on the phone. Be careful not to purchase Royal Caribbean virtual gift cards through AARP, as they may be "invalid" after you've already paid.

Boy, what Royal Caribbean messed up with gift cards through AARP, they don't respect me. As a previous poster said "wrong" spent hours and I mean hours/day on the phone. AARP was called back and disappointed that we couldn't do anything that was basically sold by the cruise line.

Their $600 credit was applied to my cruise reservation today, June 28, 2022. However, I no longer intend to purchase Royal Caribbean virtual gift cards. The process of buying them back is very burdensome for the buyer. Even if you follow all the steps exactly, you may not need to do all the work required to use them.
If AARP truly wants to serve its retired members, it needs to streamline this process. Thanks for all the discussion this thread has generated. However, the purchase was made honestly according to the site's instructions. The refund process is not the buyer's fault when using a credit card to purchase virtual gift cards.

Using a credit card for any online purchase is common and common. I made the mistake of buying a Royal gift card that I believed would be easy to redeem like Carnival. Boy was I wrong, it's a headache to go through all the ridiculous rescue rules and procedures.

Check the terms of the cards below: Gift certificates must be redeemed through Royal Caribbean International for the US dollar value shown on the face of the certificate. 1. The certificate must be used as a form of payment for new bookings made directly with Caribbean.
After redeeming the gift certificate on your reservation, you can make a reservation at your preferred travel agency. 2. The voucher is valid for international Caribbean cruises only and is non-refundable for cash. This can be applied to all ships, departures and stateroom units. 3. Certificate can only be used on new US personal bookings.

A Royal Caribbean representative says: In a recent call I was told that they applied on Thursday June 23rd but would have to wait another 7-10 days to see it show up on my cruise. While these are over, there is an issue with how long it takes for Caribbean reservations to receive these virtual gift cards purchased through AARP.

It has now been 18 business days since I received the Royal Caribbean cards in the email and they said they would be used in 7-10 days. Now I have to wait longer. Final payment is due on July 8th. My partner is scheduled for outpatient surgery on July 7th, so I will have to take him to the hospital.
I'm going on another trip on July 8th. I don't have time to mess with this if the process is taking too long. This should have been covered long ago. This gives AARP and Royal Caribbean a bad name as far as virtual gift cards go.
Of course, some improvements are needed. They shouldn't be too difficult to use! I had the same problem and never should have bought it. AARP should not sell them. Royal Caribbean will not redeem my gift card and this is a new booking. I have followed the instructions as stated in the terms and conditions.
Now I've lost money and have a useless gift card. See my last answer above for the latest on virtual gift card purchases. Please try using your virtual gift cards. Royal Caribbean is now saying that they are processing payments for my cruise yesterday, June 23rd using virtual gift cards.
I wish you the best of luck with all of this. I know the pain of trying to save some money! So you have the same problem. AARP should not be selling cards like this to members on its site. Since this happened to both of us, it shows that AARP is the source of the problem, not the recipient!
