This will be a family favorite that replaces the traditional white elephant game year after year! I'll be the first to admit that this is actually the Christmas present version of my famous left, right, eat game that I shared in this birthday game post.
This was so popular with readers and my own family that I decided to change things up this year with a proper gift sharing game! I love that it's easy enough for kids to play, but fun enough for teens and adults alike! The general idea of the game is this - everyone brings a gift (or several gifts) and the gifts are passed around the table based on the roll of the dice until all the gifts are opened.
Once all the presents are opened, the game ends and everyone goes home with the present they received. But it's more than that! Watch the video below to see a quick demo of the game AND see how cool this gift trading game is! Before you go to play, you have to make a decision.

You can ask people to bring one, two or three gifts. If you make two or three, specify that the value of the items must be less than $15 for all three gifts. If they only bring one gift, just set your price to whatever you want.

It's more fun with multiple gifts, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work well with one or two. I've included instructions below for playing with just one gift or many. When you ask your guests to bring gifts, make sure they know to bring them wrapped.
This game only works when wrapping gifts. When guests arrive, they should place their gifts in a pile on the table or on the floor, whichever suits you best. You can also choose what kind of gift you want people to bring - a white elephant or a plain one.

Gift Exchange Game Preparation
Have everyone place their gifts in a pile in the middle. Before you start playing, ask everyone to pick one (or 2 or 3) gifts from the middle and then sit in the circle. These are the gifts that will get them started. Alternatively, you can have whoever is hosting the game simply hand out all the gifts until everyone gets the correct number of gifts.
Everyone must start with the same number of gifts and will end with the same number. Choose someone to start the game and give them the dice. If you're playing with one gift per person, give them one guess. Two gifts = two dice. Three gifts = three dice.

They roll the appropriate number of dice and take actions based on what they roll. Each die corresponds to one gift in their pile. The person rolling the dice decides which gifts to trade and steal. For example, if you are playing with three gifts and the person rolls 2,4,6, they exchange one of their gifts with a gift from the person on the left (player's choice).

How To Play

Note: The player must act on the gifts they have at the time of the roll, not the gifts they exchange or replace after their roll. So if player A trades a gift with a player to his right, he also cannot use that gift as a gift he wants to open.
The game ends immediately after the last gift is opened and everyone collects the gifts in hand. If someone completes their own gift, they can trade it if they want or just keep it. This is one of the funnest parts of the game because you never know when the last gift will open and there is always a chance to change your gift until the last gift is opened.

If you want, you can make another one for everyone after opening the last gift, including the person who opened the last gift. This will add some time to your game and opening the last gift will not be a hassle, but only for you!
How To Play
Whatever you decide, make sure everyone knows ahead of time so you don't get confused or complain. If two people bring two gifts, the game will be the same, except that each person will only roll two instead of three. And the game will probably be a bit shorter.
If people only bring one gift, the game is played the same way, except they only roll one die instead of two or three. A few reasons why many gifts are more fun than one: We played this last night with a group of 35 people, and honestly, I don't recommend doing it with a large group.
If I have a large group, I split it into two groups and play two small games to make it more fun. Or try one of these other trading games. If you're ready to play this game with the whole group, here are some changes we've made to speed up the game and keep everyone happy.
You also want to make sure you're all in a circle so people can see what others are opening and getting. I've seen someone set up where they have 3 separate tables (not connected) playing the same game and no one knows what's in one because they can't see.
