Repentance Is A Gift From God - For a long time in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, many have viewed repentance as a painful and shameful step that one must go through to become right with God again. But as understanding and learning takes place, there are many who begin to see repentance as a gift rather than a punishment.

Repentance Is A Gift From God

2 Timothy 2:25—Is Repentance A Gift Of God Or An Act Of Man?

Do not use without permission. It is God who gives gifts, not you, not me. An important part of the counseling process is for a counselor to take active steps toward repentance. In the counseling room, the counselor calls men and women to put off the old self and put on the new (Ephesians 4:22-24).

But, as any consultant will tell you, that's not always the case. Sometimes a consultant works with a consultant for weeks and there is no change. The counselor can follow up the session with encouraging text messages, spend time in the evening praying for them, and take other steps they might not normally take – and yet fail.

There are many reasons why a lawyer may not take a step toward recanting, but one that is not usually mentioned: Repentance is not offered for that counsel. When Christ and Nicodemus are recorded talking in John 3, Jesus tells Nicodemus that unless he is born "of water and the Spirit," he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Until God does something in everyone's heart (ie, they have to be born again or "from above"), they will always be in their sins and will never even see the kingdom of heaven. Later, the same idea is taken up in Acts 11:18 when Peter tells of his ministry to the Gentiles.

“Search Me, O God, And Know My Heart! Try Me And Know My Thoughts! And See If There Be Any Grievous Way In Me, And Lead Me In The Way Everlasting!” -Psalm 139:23-24, Esv

The Jews who believed in Christ were very upset at some of what Peter did. They, the text says, "struggled with him" (Acts 11:2). But when they heard Peter's story, they replied, "Well, God has given to the Gentiles repentance that leads to life." This is stated elsewhere in Acts 5:31 and 2 Timothy 2:25.

The point is this: repentance is a gift. It is something given to us by God. We should all see when we choose to repent of our sins for our own salvation or for our own sanctification: it is a gift from God to us.

Like all gifts, our thinking has some implications. In the Parable of the Servants (Matthew 20:1-16), we see what many consider an illogical part of Scripture that our minds cannot comprehend. A boy works for an hour and gets paid the same as a boy who works all day.

These men, who had worked all day in the sun, "murmured" and thought that this was not so. How did the master respond? "Is your eye jealous because I am generous?" boom We should all feel the gravity of the question. It is God who gives gifts, not you, not me.

What Does The Bible Say About God's Forgiveness?

Countless passages indicate how limited our understanding of God's providence is. We know that He works all things for His glory, and we know that He works all things to make us like Christ (Romans 8:28-29). However, we don't understand the process of creating the design, the medium or many of the details.

That is why we are called to such deep faith in Him. If God is the gift of repentance for His glory, then every counselor must understand that the reason they cannot change their counsel is because God has not given them repentance. We don't know that God didn't give it to them, but if repentance was a gift, they couldn't have been given that gift if they hadn't repented.

There are many possible answers to such a question, but no one can be sure until we all see him with an unopened face. For example, Paul points out in Romans 11 that because of Israel's rejection, you were welcomed (Romans 11:32). Why did God do this?

We should cry with Paul in the next verse, "Oh, the depth of the riches of both wisdom and knowledge of God! How unknown are his judgments, and his ways are unfathomable! (Romans 11:33) You do not catch it. Is the word searched? You also have the side of heaven that God has withheld repentance from one.
