If you're a solo player, you can cache (slow down your leveling a bit) to unlock as many parts of the Altar or wait until Monday (three big days) before unlocking more than 14 points. Think about how hard you can blast this first weekend and if you have a leaderboard goal, then call.
As mentioned earlier, you won't unlock more than the first two points before level 70. Fortunately, you only have three options. Anointed is often valuable during the leveling process, while Mirror is a long-term value. When the Altar sacrifice costs a specific item, it will act exactly like a salvaging blacksmith.
Notes For Completing The Altar Of Rites
Click the point you want next, then click the Sacrifice button. This changes your mouse to the usual salvage hammer icon, which you now use to click on the victim's item in your bag. Know your dependence on Altar. Whispering Atonement at Rank 125 means completing an Echoing Nightmare.
Upgraded weapons mean a high Whispering redemption and enough Royal Flawless gems to get you going. Primordial Ashes is separate from the Primal Ancient item, which means completing a single GR70 to unlock it. Speaking of single Greater Rifts, each blood unlock means the pool is full of that amount - you can't "pay" Blood Shards in sacrifices until you reach the required amount.
