Banda Aceh at the top of Sumatra has long been a strategic transport and trade hub in the eastern Indian Ocean and was an important trading port between the region, India and Arabia. The 26 December 2004 tsunami killed around 150,000 people in Banda Aceh.
Parts of the city were permanently under water. Since then, many aid organizations have been on the ground to help with the reconstruction. The long-standing conflict between the Acehnese Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Army (TNI) was resolved for the time being by the peace agreement of 15 August 2005. Since then, the peace process has gone quite smoothly.
In 2006, the province held its first direct and democratic municipal elections. In 2007, the first democratically elected governor, Irwandi Yusuf, was sworn in. Banda Aceh has a tropical rainforest climate with almost constant average temperatures. The average annual temperature in the city is 27 °C.

However, the city experiences wetter and drier seasons, with June to August being the driest months of the year. Banda Aceh does not have a true dry month with an average of less than 60 mm of rainfall. On average, the city experiences a little less than 2000 mm of rainfall annually.

Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa. It is possible to obtain a 30-day visa on arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process the visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before
12.00pm, although this is only intended to apply to Malaysian residents. There are non-stop night buses with journey times between 9 and 13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan.
The price varies from Rp 110,000 in a regular seater bus to Rp 200,000 in a wide-seat bus. Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but journeys are generally longer. The prices are slightly cheaper than the buses. It is also possible to travel to Banda Aceh from Medan via Kutacane and Takengon.

This will take a total of 20 hours. Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and either Medan, 1 hour drive, Jakarta, 2 hours 40 minutes drive, or Singapore, almost 4 hours. There is no longer a bus that serves the airport. The only way into town is airport taxi which is set at Rp 100,000 (2019).
The taxi desk is on the far left when you exit the arrivals gate. The visa formalities at this airport are similar to those of other Indonesian immigration ports. The nearest major (international) ferry port is Belawan port near Medan. It receives ships from Batam, Indonesia (a common route when coming from Singapore).

The Penang ferry is no longer running. From Ulhee-lhee, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and to Pulau Aceh. The main modes of transportation are becak (motorcycle taxi) and labi-labi (public minibus). Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, local people got used to excessive fees, but now stabilization has returned.
Examples of Becak prices are: Airport - Grand Mosque: Rp 40,000; Bus Station - Grand Mosque: Rp 8,000; Grand Mosque – Penayong: Rp 5,000. Within the city, generally Rp 10,000 should be enough. It is possible to take a "tsunami tour" as there are still many inland boats and other memorials dedicated to the devastating day in 2004. There are about 65 NGOs operating in Banda Aceh;

But they generally do not recruit local non-Indonesians. At the peak of the post-tsunami relief effort, there were 850 NGOs, but many of these were non-Muslim religious organizations and their licenses were not renewed by the Indonesian government. In the city center there are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets. There are also some small souvenir shops selling various local items.
Hermes Palace Shopping Mall is located in the center of Banda Aceh. The mall has over 100 stores with a food court, supermarket and clothing stores. The Acehnese breakfast is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, which is sold in cafes everywhere. Food stalls and padang restaurants are open in the unscathed part of town, and fruit carts are everywhere.

There are some nice cafes with peaceful views of the rice fields around Ulee Kareng, along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western outskirts. The center is home to three fast food chains, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut. As with all travel, common sense and a good attitude are all you need to navigate this small town.

However, there are some points to consider. Although Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities these days, it's still best not to go out alone after 10pm. As Sharia law is enforced, drinking alcohol is not permitted, although it is still possible. Violation of the locally understood interpretation of Sharia law can result in arrest by Sharia police, with corporal punishment and public ridicule meted out to an offending Muslim.
Muslim women should normally wear headscarves in public places. Western style bathing suits are not recommended except in Sabang. Pickpockets are rare, but be alert and alert in tight spaces.
