Present Vs Gift - It's that time again when we're busy shopping, packing and giving. Sometimes they are called gifts, sometimes gifts. Is there a difference? In Old English it meant a dowry given to the bride's parents. Present comes from the French for "to present". A gift is what is given or offered. Both words were used for the 13th century idea of something passing through a transfer of ownership without expectation of payment.
The words gift and gift are well-matched synonyms that essentially mean the same thing, but even well-matched synonyms have their own particular connotations and usage patterns. The gift applies to a wider range of situations. Gifts can be talents: you can have the gift of babbling or the gift of music.
Gifts can be intangible: there is the gift of understanding or the gift of a peaceful day. We don't usually use the present tense to describe such things. Gifts are more concrete or a little more, well, present. If your entire family donated to your college fund for your birthday, would you say "I got a lot of gifts"?

It doesn't seem very wrong, but since you never hold such gifts in your hand, the gifts seem to fit better. Gift can also be an attributive noun, acting as an adjective to modify another noun. What do you call the type of store where you can buy gifts for people?

Present seems to be used more often than present, although it's hard to get an exact number, because if you compare the occurrences of the present noun to the noun gift, you're including the other present noun, which means here and now. However, a noun in the present plural includes only the word we want.
In the Corpus of Modern American English, gifts are four times larger than gifts. However, in my personal sense of the word, the present - although it may not be as common - sounds more casual than the present. I expect a child to ask Santa for many, many gifts, not many, many gifts.

The colloquial meaning of gift, as in "an object freely given to another person," appears in the 1200s. In the 1300s, we can find gift meaning "special talent." The word gift seems to come from an Old Norse word, with relatives through the Germanic language.
