Prank Gift Wrap - Banda Aceh is the capital of the Indonesian province of Aceh on the island of Sumatra. It was also the capital of the Sultanate of Aceh when it was founded in the late 15th century. On December 26, 2004, a tsunami killed about 150,000 people in Banda Aceh. Some parts of the city are permanently under water. Since then, many aid agencies have been involved in the reconstruction. The long-running conflict between the Acehnese Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Army (TNI) has so far been resolved by a peace agreement signed on August 15, 2005.
Since then, the peace process has been quite smooth. In 2006, the state held its first direct and democratic local elections. In 2007, the first democratically elected governor, Irvandi Yusuf, was inaugurated. Banda Aceh has a tropical forest climate and the average temperature is almost constant.
The average annual temperature of the city is 27 °C. However, the city has both wet and dry seasons, with June to August being the driest months of the year. Banda Aceh does not have a true dry season month with an average rainfall of less than 60 mm.
By Bus[Edit]
On average, the city receives a little less than 2000 mm of rainfall per year. Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but they do need an Indonesian visa. A 30-day visa on arrival is available at Banda Aceh Airport.

The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process the visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork by noon, although this should only apply to Malaysian residents. There are non-stop night buses with a 9-13 hour journey from Medan to Banda Aceh.
Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. The price ranges from Rp 110,000 in a standard bus to Rp 200,000 in a bus with wide seats. Minibuses can also take you from the Medan region to Banda Aceh, but the journeys are generally longer.
Prices are slightly cheaper than coaches. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutachan and Takengon. It lasts a total of 20 hours. Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan (1 hour journey), Jakarta (2-40 minute journey) or Singapore (about 4 hours).
By Bus[Edit]
There is no bus to the airport anymore. The only way to get around the city is by airport taxi, which costs Rp 100,000 (2019). The taxi counter is on the left as you exit the arrival gate. Visa formalities at this airport are similar to other immigration gates in Indonesia.
The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port near Medan. Ships from Batam, Indonesia (common route when coming from Singapore). The Penang ferry no longer operates. You can go to Pulau Veh and Pulau Aceh Banda Aceh from Port Ulhei-lhei. The main modes of transportation are becak (motorcycle taxi) and labi-labi (public minibus).

Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, local residents got used to exorbitant fees, but now stabilization has returned. Sample Becak ticket prices are as follows: Airport - Great Mosque. 40,000 Rp.; Bus terminal - Great Mosque: 8000 rubles; Grand Mosque - Penayong: 5000 rub.
A total of Rp 10,000 within the city should do it. It is possible to go on a 'tsunami tour' as there are still many boats and other memorials to the devastating day in 2004. About 65 NGOs operate in Banda Aceh; however, they generally do not recruit non-Indonesians locally.
By Plane[Edit]
These NGOs include various UN and EU agencies, USNS, Care, Americare, Islamic Relief, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Australian Red Cross, Turkish Red Crescent, Kuwait Red Crescent, French Red Cross, IMC , IOM, WHO, Japan. International Cooperation System, Habitat, Doctors Without Borders, Japan Platform, USAID.
At the height of the post-tsunami relief effort, there were 850 NGOs operating, but many were non-Muslim religious organizations and their permits were not renewed by the Indonesian government. There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the city center. There are also small souvenir shops selling various local products.
Hermes Palace shopping center is located in the center of Banda Aceh. The mall has more than 100 stores including grocery stores, supermarkets and clothing stores. An Acehnese breakfast is nasi gourih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in cafes everywhere. Food stalls and padang restaurants are open all over the district and fruit carts are everywhere.

Around Ulee Kareng, on the western edge of the city, along Jl Tengku Iskander, there are some lovely coffee houses overlooking the relaxing rice paddies. The center has three fast food chains: A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut. As with all travel, you need common sense and a good attitude in this small town.
By Boat[Edit]
However, there are a few points to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer these days than most European cities, it's still best not to go out alone after 10pm. As Sharia law is enforced, drinking alcohol is not allowed, although it is still possible.
Violation of locally perceived interpretations of Sharia law can result in arrest by the Sharia police and physical punishment and public ridicule of the offending Muslim. Muslim women must usually wear a headscarf in public. Western style swimwear is not recommended except in Sabang. Pickpocketing is rare, but be alert and aware in crowded places.
