Popcorn Gift Bag - I lived in Australia for a while and decided to get up and travel. I ended up in Indonesia looking for waves with a friend. We lived mostly near the city, we went to the beach every day. At some point I needed a bag and went to a street vendor.

I wanted a vegan backpack and found a rather crudely made bag that had these unique designs. I brought the bag home with me and people stopped me on the street in America to tell me how much they loved my bag. I found myself traveling around Sumatra again, working on a documentary series about natural medicines and healing.
One day I came across the embroidered designs that you now see on Banda Bags again. I absolutely had to know where they came from, so I traveled to the countryside and met the women who created such unique designs. They were magnificent artisans who designed quirky and unique hand-embroidered designs and I was mesmerized by their craftsmanship.
I knew immediately that I had to start working with these women who, like magic, created these designs. My search for these magical and unique designs led me to a village in the Banda Aceh region of Sumatra. If you've been paying attention to the news for the past fifteen years, you'll remember that this is the place that was hit by the world's worst recorded tsunami.
Traveling Sumatra, Running Into A Unique Design
The earthquake that shook the area literally shook the earth off its axis. The tsunami that followed devastated the area and killed more than two hundred thousand people. I came after this disaster and it was ten years after it happened. Looking around, I could imagine that it had only happened a week ago.

I couldn't believe that this is where these beautiful embroidered patterns were born. One day I had the idea that I could bring these unique role models to the world and I could help these women stuck in a situation that had not improved for years.
This remote area had very little opportunity to revive its economy, but they had something the world would appreciate. Together, we designed a cruelty-free vegan bag that could grace the runway as well as the checkout line. The weekend bag was born. Soon after designing the weekender, we came up with Nano.
It's a vegan leather handbag that really makes a statement. Then we designed a vegan backpack that everyone can carry. The vegan backpack is beautiful and just the right size to carry all the essentials. The cloak bag is a unique design that we came up with because we haven't seen anything like it.
A Second Run-In
There is still nothing like it. Our vegan wallets take on familiar shapes, but the design is totally Banda. We're constantly playing with new ideas and want to be one of the most innovative vegan, cruelty-free and fashion handbag companies on the planet. Banda Bags helped increase the economic opportunities of those so affected by the tsunami.
When I started Banda Bags, I made it the foundation of a company to pay fair wages and ensure the safety and welfare of artisans. I also wanted a sustainable, cruelty-free bag. The weekend bag and all our styles are made from the highest quality vegan leather.

Banda Bags does not use any animal products, making our bags 100% vegan. Our vegan leather handbags are handmade from selected materials that we constantly try to update. Right now we are looking at all the ways to make our bags more sustainable for the environment.
This means sourcing materials with a higher amount of recycled content and pursuing innovation in production. There are all kinds of great materials that may one day replace the vegan leather we use today. We are talking about materials made from all natural sources including pineapples.
The Ravages Of A Tsunami
We're even looking at ways to make threads out of plastic pulled from the ocean! I correctly guessed that people would love the unique designs I found in Indonesia. From the first days of working with the artisans in their remote village until now, a lot has happened.
