Kanto/Johto Pokémon that are not part of the Hoenn Pokédex must be obtained from FireRed or LeafGreen. The Mystery Gift (Japanese: 是京ないくりもの Mystery Gift) is a system present in the main series games since Generation II that allows players to purchase exclusive items and Pokémon.
In Generation II, the Mystery Gift system is used in conjunction with the infrared port on the Game Boy Color to communicate with other Mystery Gift-enabled games to give room decorations or items to other players. It can also be used with Pokémon Stadium 2 and Pokémon Pikachu 2 GS from Carrie.
The Mystery Gift can be used a maximum of five times per day, with no more than one gift per player. In Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console releases, Mystery Gift uses the Nintendo 3DS infrared port. Virtual Console versions can only perform Mystery Gift with other Virtual Console versions – they cannot join Game Boy Color versions, Pokémon Stadium 2 or Pokémon Pikachu 2.

In Virtual Console releases, the Mystery Gift can be opened normally, as the game is simulated as played on Game Boy Color. Once unlocked, the ability to use the Mystery Gift is accessible from the main menu. Although the Mystery Gift can be activated on the Game Boy Advance system, they cannot be used due to the lack of an infrared port.
When the Mystery Gift is used to connect to another Generation II main series game, each of the connected games will receive a random item and the opponent in the Trainer's House will be replaced by another player. When used to join Pokémon Stadium 2, the handheld game will receive an item;
some items can only be received when connecting to Stadium 2. When Pokémon Pikachu 2 connects to GS, the Pokémon Pikachu 2 player decides how many Watts to transfer from the device, and the item received will depend on the amount of Watts transferred. Decorations obtained through the Mystery Gift are automatically sent to the player's computer.

Items obtained through Mystery Gift can be picked up at any Pokémon Center, from the NPC behind the leftmost counter on the second floor. Items waiting to be picked up in Pokémon Stadium 2 can be moved to a Trainer Pack, Trainer Box, or N64 Metal Case in the Pokémon Lab.

The Alteration Cave also intended to use this feature to alter the wild Pokemon present there. It's language dependent, meaning a player can only receive mystery gifts for games in their language. To activate the Mystery Gift system, the player must fill out a survey found at any Poké Mart by entering the following phrase using the easy chat system (based on the game's language) and save the game.

Mysterious events can only be unlocked after defeating Norman and obtaining the Token of Balance. To access this feature, the player must talk to the NPC near the computer in the Petalburg City Pokémon Center and enter the following phrase using the easy chat system (based on the game's language).

Gifts can be purchased wirelessly, via Nintendo Wi-Fi connection, or from a friend. A particular gift can only be redeemed once. As a result, the player can only get one of each item or Pokemon from the events or mentioned games. Gifts are transferred via Wonder Cards, of which the player can keep up to three.
