People rarely fall in the middle. If you've been working out at home for a while and would like to explore joining a gym, getting a Planet Fitness membership can be a worthwhile investment, especially if your goal is to improve your personal fitness while working out with like-minded people.

Others, like powerlifters and Olympic weightlifters, or those who prefer Orangetheory Fitness' instructor-led HIIT-style workouts, may not benefit from what this gym doesn't have. In this review, we discuss the cost of a Planet Fitness membership, what to do if you need to cancel your Planet Fitness membership, and a personal experience trying out the facility as a guest.

You might not decide to join one in your area based on our review, but at least you'll have some knowledge of how Planet Fitness' processes work, what their equipment is like, and the atmosphere itself before heading out for an in-person experience. Planet Fitness advertises itself as a "judgment free zone" and their target markets are both beginners and people looking to lose weight.
The information that follows about PF memberships and facilities is based on a combination of research and also my personal visit to a Planet Fitness location in Beckley, West Virginia, where I trained and spoke with the staff about a potential membership for myself. There are three Planet Fitness membership categories: Prepaid, Classic and PF Black Card.
Prepaid and Classic memberships come with unlimited access to the member's home club where they register (hours vary by location), access to the PF mobile app and free in-club fitness training. Black card membership is what the PF promotes heavily. It comes with all the above benefits as well as virtual fitness training, permission to bring a free guest, access to any PF branch worldwide and services located in the Black Club area such as hydro massage, massage chairs, red light therapy, solarium and 50-
percentage discounts on selected drinks they sell. If you want to subscribe for an annual membership, the price is $199. There is no registration or cancellation fee; however, prepaid membership is final and non-refundable. Classic membership is $10 per month and PF Black Card membership is $24.99 per month.
Planet Fitness Membership
There is also a one-time registration fee, but the staff I spoke with informed me that the fee changes daily. On the day I visited, I could sign up for a classic membership for a $62.98 registration fee, or I could become a PF Black Card member by paying $37.15.
Some days it might be less, some days it might be more, and as long as there's a promotion going on, it might be no cost at all. In addition to the one-time enrollment fee, there is also an annual fee of $39 that must be paid on October 1 of each year you are a member.

All Classic and PF Black Card membership payments must be made by automatic transfer from your bank account or credit card. You cannot pay monthly fees in advance. At the time of writing, there are no family membership packages, but in the summer of 2022, middle schoolers or older could train for free.
If you have to move or simply wish to cancel your membership, you must sign the form at the place where you registered for confirmation. There is no fee to cancel your membership and you can even complete the last month that has already been debited from your account.
Planet Fitness Membership
In the second way, your membership can be terminated if it is terminated by management. One of the controversies surrounding Planet Fitness is the infamous "failure alarm" that allegedly goes off when you make too much noise during your workout. The lunk alarm is actually staff controlled and they can trigger the alarm from their desk if they feel you are making too much noise.
Once the alarm is raised, management can potentially cancel your membership. Membership Overview
It can also be useful if you travel a lot and need to train at other PF locations. If these benefits are not so valuable to you, you can get by with a classic or prepaid membership package. Black Card members can bring guests with them at any time, as long as they do not bring the same guest every day.
If you are a Classic member and bring a guest who can sign up as a new member, the staff may allow them to train for free that day. When I went to PF to investigate getting a membership, they let me practice for free as a guest, but I had to provide contact information and take a photo at the counter for their records.
I didn't have to submit any financial information. The PF website says it's all for members to express themselves, but they have a standard code that should be followed, such as no open-toed shoes, jeans or trousers with grommets, and the shoes you wear must be clean.
You also can't wear see-through clothing or items they would consider "intimidating," such as shirts with profanity or depictions of violence. It costs nothing to work with a PF trainer at the gym where you register. This service is included in all three membership types.
