About 150,000 people died in the Banda Aceh tsunami on 26 December 2004. Some parts of the city are permanently under water. Many aid agencies have since become available to help with recovery. The long-running conflict between the Acehnese Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) was resolved by a peace agreement on 15 August 2005. Since then, the peace process has been relatively smooth.
In 2006, the province held its first direct and democratic local elections. In 2007, Irwandi Yusuf, the first democratically elected governor, took office. Banda Aceh has a tropical rainforest climate with near average temperatures. The average annual temperature in the city is 27 degrees Celsius.
However, the city has both wet and dry seasons, with June to August being the driest months of the year. Banda Aceh does not have a true dry season where the average rainfall is less than 60 mm. On average, the city receives a little less than 2,000 mm of rainfall per year.
By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners no longer need a tourist permit (jalan sura) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. A 30-day visa is available at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process one-day visas if you complete certain documents before noon, although this only applies to Malaysian residents.

There is a non-stop night bus from Medan to Banda Aceh that takes 9 to 13 hours. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. Prices range from 110,000 rupees for a regular-sized bus to 200,000 rupees for a wide-seater.
Minibuses will take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journey is usually longer. Slightly cheaper than buses. You can travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutakan and Takengon. It will be 20 hours in total. Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan, 1 hour away, Jakarta, 2 hours 40 minutes away, or Singapore, almost 4 hours away.
There is no bus service to the airport. The only way into the city center is by airport taxi, which costs 100,000 rupees (2019). After leaving the arrival gate, the taxi counter is on the far left. Visa procedures at this airport are similar to other immigration gates in Indonesia.
By Bus[Edit]
The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port near Medan. Receives ferries from Batam, Indonesia (shared route from Singapore). The ferry from Penang no longer operates. From Ulhe Leh, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Veh and Pulau Aceh. The main modes of transport are beck (motorcycle taxi) and labi-labi (public minibus).
Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, locals were used to overcharging, but stability has now returned. Ticket prices: Airport - Grand Mosque: 40,000 rupiah Bus Station - Grand Mosque: 8,000 rupiah Grand Mosque - Penang: 5,000 rupiah. Within the city it is usually 10,000 rupees.

Inland, there is a memorial and another memorial dedicated to the day of the disaster in 2004, so you can go on a "Tsunami Tour". There are about 65 NGOs in Banda Aceh. However, they generally do not accept non-Indonesians locally. These NGOs are various UN and EU agencies, USNS, Care America, Islamic Relief, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Australian Red Cross Society, Turkish Red Crescent, Kuwait Red Crescent, French Red Crescent Society, IMC, IOM, World
health organization, Japan International Cooperation System, Habitat, Doctors Without Borders, Japan Platform, USAID. At the height of the post-tsunami relief effort, there were 850 NGOs, but most of them were non-Muslim religious organizations that had not been renewed by the Indonesian government. There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the city center.

There are also several small souvenir shops selling local items. Hermès Mall is located in the heart of Banda Aceh. The mall has more than 100 stores including restaurants, supermarkets and clothing stores. The basis of Achenes breakfast is nasi gorih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold everywhere in cafes.
Padang food stalls and restaurants are open in the unspoiled parts of town and fruit carts are ubiquitous. Along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of town, past Ulee Kareng, there are some nice cafes overlooking the rice fields. In the center you will find three fast food restaurants: A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.
As with all travel, common sense and a good attitude are essential in this small town. But there are a few points to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is now safer than most European cities, it is still best not to go out after 10pm.

As Sharia law is enforced, alcohol is not allowed, although it is still possible. A Muslim accused of violating a locally perceived interpretation of Sharia law may be subject to physical punishment and public ridicule by the Sharia police. Muslim women are generally required to perform ablution in public.
