Pipestone National Monument offers an opportunity to explore American Indian culture and the natural resources of the tallgrass prairie. Established by Congress in 1937 to protect historic sugar cane quarries, the site is considered sacred by many American Indians. Through centuries of use, American Indians continued to quarry the stone, which they carved into sacred pipes.

Stone pipes have long been known among the prehistoric peoples of North America; 2,000-year-old specimens were found in Mound City in present-day Ohio. The digging of this Minnesota quarry probably began in the 17th century, a time that coincided with the acquisition of metal tools by European traders.
Carvers appreciate this hard but relatively soft stone, which ranges from mottled pink to tile red. By all accounts this location became the preferred source of pipestone among the plains tribes. But until about 1700, the Dakota Sioux controlled the quarries and distributed the stone only through trade.

About Us
The sugarcane quarries have been visited for centuries by Native Americans to extract the red stone sugarcane used to make cups for their sacred ceremonial pipes. Pipestone National Monument offers a visitor center, museum, orientation film, exhibit, gift shop, Native American woodcarving demonstrations (May through October), a ¾-mile walking trail along Pipestone Creek, Winnewissa Falls, and tallgrass prairie.
