Thousands of gift cards were distributed among three local Pick 'N Save shops to help ease the community's financial burden. Last week, the We Energies crew worked around the clock to restore power as they tackled "the largest power recovery project in history."

They estimate that more than 225,000 customers lost power as a result of the intense storm. For families, no electricity means stale food in the fridge. Some said they threw away hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise. Now, a partnership between Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, the City of Milwaukee, and Pick 'N Save is trying to help with gift cards.
We are providing gift cards to individuals and families who were deprived of power by the recent summer storms," said Martha Collins, Advocate for Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin. "We're hoping a little bit of that can help them replace some of the lost food." There are about 3,000 gift cards in total, and each card has enough money to support a family for a week.

If necessary, cars have been lined up since 5am on Friday morning. Collins said the turnout was outstanding, and people like Laverne Lee really appreciate it. "It means a lot to me because my food goes bad when lights and objects go out," said Lee.
To qualify, says Collins, you have to live in Milwaukee and prove that the hurricanes cripple your strength. "If you don't have evidence of a disconnection, we can confirm it here," Collins said. "We just need your current address." If that includes you, you can choose a Pick 'n Save store on Friday, August 20 between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and receive a gift card.
You only need to bring ID and proof from We Energies that you have lost power. The effort is a partnership between the City of Milwaukee and Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin. A total of 3,000 gift cards will be awarded. If you are unable to make it by Friday, August 21, a food distribution center will be set up in Greater Milwaukee New Birth on Saturday.
