In the tsunami on December 26, 2004, about 150,000 people died in Banda Aceh. Many aid agencies have been present since then to help rebuild. The long conflict between the Acehnese Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Army (TNI) was resolved for the time being through a peace agreement on August 15, 2005. The peace process has been quite smooth since then.
In 2006, the province held its first direct and democratic local elections. In 2007, the first democratically elected governor, Irwandi Yusuf, was inaugurated. Banda Aceh has a tropical rainforest climate, with an almost constant average temperature. The city's annual average temperature is 27 °C. However, the city experiences wet and drier seasons, with June to August being the driest months of the year.
Banda Aceh does not have a real dry season month, where an average of less than 60 mm of precipitation falls. On average, the city experiences just under 2000 mm of rainfall each year. Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required.
By Bus[Edit]
It is possible to obtain a 30-day visa on arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. Sometimes the embassy in Kuala Lumpur can process the visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before noon, although this should only apply to Malaysian residents. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. The price varies from Rp 110,000 in a normal seat bus to Rp 200,000 in a wide seat bus. Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journeys are usually longer.
The prices are slightly cheaper than the coaches. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. This will be a total of 20 hours. There is no longer a bus that serves the airport. The only way to get to the city area is by airport taxi, which is set at Rp 100,000 (2019). The taxi counter is on the far left when you exit the arrival gate. Visa formalities at this airport are similar to those at other Indonesian immigration gates.
By Bus[Edit]
The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port, near Medan. It accepts ships from Batam, Indonesia (common route when coming from Singapore). The ferry from Penang no longer runs. From Ulhee-lhee, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh.
The main means of getting around are becak (motorcycle taxi) and labi-labi (public minibus). Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, people got used to the overload, but now stabilization has returned. Sample becak rates include: Airport - Grand Mosque: Rp 40,000;

The Acehnese breakfast is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in coffee shops everywhere. Food stalls and padang restaurants are open throughout the untouched part of town, and fruit carts are everywhere.
There are some nice coffee houses with soothing rice paddy views around Ulee Kareng, along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of town. There are three fast food chain restaurants in the centre, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut. As with any traveller, common sense and a good attitude are all you need in this small town.

However, there are a few points to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer today than most European cities, it is still best not to go out alone after 10pm. Due to the implementation of Sharia law, alcohol consumption is not permitted, although it is still possible.
By Boat[Edit]
Violating the locally recognized interpretations of Sharia law can lead to arrest by the Sharia police with corporal punishment and public ridicule inflicted on an offending Muslim. Muslim women should normally wear headscarves in public places. Western swimsuits are not recommended except in Sabang. Pickpocketing is rare, but be aware and alert in crowded areas.
