Also known as the Christmas Tsunami or Boxing Day, the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was triggered.
February 26, 2004. A magnitude 9.1 earthquake destroys a 900-mile fault line where the Indian and Australian tectonic plates meet. It was a large megathrust earthquake that occurred when a heavy oceanic plate slid under a lighter continental plate. The earthquake caused the sea floor to rise suddenly by 40 meters, creating a massive tsunami.
Within 20 minutes of the earthquake, the first wave of hundreds of feet hit the coast of Banda Aceh, killing more than 100,000 people and reducing the city to rubble. Then a series of tsunamis hit the coasts of Thailand, India and Sri Lanka, killing tens of thousands more.
